En taro Tassadar, friends and fellow-VNers. I hope you’ve had a nice week. Mine has been pretty nuts, to be frank, and all I want to do is hide in my office, not do flashcards, and finally find out how the Starcraft story ends now that StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void has finally come out.
Speaking of releases… Don’t forget that Higurashi Ch 2 was released this week (Get it here!). Or that G-Senjou no Maou was released last week on steam (link). Or that High School Romance is coming out this coming week (Link). OR that CLANNAD is coming out on Steam in just 10 days (Link)!
Anyway! Welcome to our weekly VNTS (Visual Novel Translation Status) series, in which we track visual novel translation updates in-house (we don’t rely on /jp/ posts on 4ch, for example) and post it for your enlightenment and enjoyment each Saturday. If you find any errors, or you think a project is missing from this list, please let me know in the comments. Any new updates are marked by orange text.
The Short Version:

Zakabox™ Commentary
[Zaka… You are our only hope… Please come in, Zaka… Zaka, do you read me? Where could he be? – Tay]
「…Right behind you, Tay. *pantses victim*
Well-Taylored pants aside, we sure have some nice Chinese porn powerpoints lined up soon. Now, Deccy’s going to rave about Gahkthun below, and I’m personally kind of hyped for it myself. However that said, something even more interesting would be Clock Up’s Euphoria, which has some pretty extreme content, lots of porn, and still has some very nice story material – or so I’ve been told. I do enjoy some occasional shock value (there are many reasons to begin reading Saya no Uta), and Euphoria should provide plenty of that – though there being a lot of brown stuff could be a bit of a downer.
A trial for Clock Up’s newest effort, Maggot Baits, was released quite recently, and one of my friends has found it quite entertaining – if Euphoria turns out well, we might get that one brought over too. Whether or not the full version of Maggot Baits will actually be any good remains to be seen, of course.
Getting CLANNAD out is big; even the original rather rough fan translation conducted many a feels train, and SP’s release should only make it better. In a stroke of brilliant marketing the current screen shots use the engine’s rather poor default bad font (I’m sure y’all care about this), though this can be fixed.
Narcissu 3rd is at 88% translated; I wonder but can’t be bothered to look up if they’ll release these as they get finished. That said, I haven’t even read side 2nd – and from what Zalor told me about its themes way back when I edited his analytical piece on Narcissu 1, I’m not sure if I want to either. More publicity for the original is always good, though, since Narcissu is a p. good introduction to visual novels if you enjoy depressing stories.
I wonder what happened to the leyline translation. Considering how other translation efforts have transpired, it’s possible licensing negotiations are responsible for the delay in this case too. Or some random technical issues that are really hard to fix, or all their QA dying, or someone critical going MIA… who knows? Maybe I should try to find out, but it’s 7am and I haven’t slept yet.
For my final question, ponder this: who are these Waku Productions guys, exactly? I imagine we’ll hear more about them reasonably soon. Or in three months. Well, maybe three months is actually reasonable, I guess. I never did finish Tomoyo After; part of it was needing a walkthrough and not really engaging me in general, and the other part was that apparently the memorial edition, still in translation, had an ending more palatable than the original one.
Tay will speak of his personal reflections on the history of our VNTS posts below. For all you bored coders out there, this is the source to the c program I eventually hacked up to format the VNTS copy properly. I never did get around to removing the debug statements, which would probably have sped it up quite a bit. Thankfully Tay and Deccy’s here to do the work these days, leaving me ample time to mess around with my Zakabox and passive-aggressively correct minor consistency errors, numbers, and so forth – and introduce errors of my own, of course.
You might note that the Higurashi ch.2 links this week are all to MangaGamer’s site, though it can also be bought on Steam. I have no idea if this is intentional, but there is a point to it: if you order through MG’s site, more money goes to them than if you were to buy it through Steam – Steam takes a 30% cut. I realize that some of you might have trouble using their store, but to the rest of you: please do use their site if you can.
On an amusing note, it seems Steam is actually charging less for it in Euros (7.19, which Google converts to $7.79) than MG is charging in dollars ($7.95). I’m not sure whether this is just MG having a higher initial price overall, or an effect of region-based pricing. I’m not complaining: often something on Steam will cost the same in dollars as in euros, which ends up a not quite negligible smidgen more expensive. 」
Decay’s Musings
I’m excited, guys. SakuSaku’s editing is drawing closer to completion, Koichoco is tantalizingly close (although they’re wrestling with some game-breaking bugs right now), Clannad is coming out in just ten days, and euphoria in fourteen days. And two more new releases this week! But none of that is not why I’m really excited.
Gahkthun is coming out December 23rd! This game has me pumped. It scratches every nerdy itch I have on my body, and I have a lot of them. I should probably shower or something, but first, wooo, Gahtkhun! Alright, sorry, I had to get it out of my system. But honestly, as I’ve posted on the forums, the Liarsoft Steampunk series is the stuff of nerdy wet dreams and Gahkthun will be the most highly rated entry to be translated yet. This is typically a genre that MangaGamer has not dabbled in much and I want to send them a message loud and clear that we want more. Well, we’ll have to buy it, first. Moe always outsells non-moe at MangaGamer, but I’m hopeful for this one because it’s the continuation of a popular series.
For those of you who haven’t done so yet, please check out Sekien no Inganock and Shikkoku no Sharnoth, two of Gahkthun’s predecessors. They’re great VNs if you’re looking for something different from the usual fare. Sekien no Inganock contains the single most unique and intriguing setting I have ever seen in a VN. Amaterasu’s translations of these VNs may not have been great but you can still find a lot to like about them in spite of that. And this may get you as pumped for Gahkthun as I am.
Looking at this list of upcoming translation releases, there’s a lot of stuff there listed for this year that I’m not particularly hopeful on. Sumaga? Doesn’t seem likely. JAST in general seems like a disappointment, with Seinarukana also seeming unlikely, and even Flowers had its release date removed from its website. Do note that this list is only official dates, stuff that is still likely to release this year like Koichoco don’t have dates listed in VNDB if no one officially proclaimed them. So I’ll still insist that there’s a lot in store for us yet before the year’s end. Get hyped.
TAYsteful™ Thoughts
Decay really deserves a shout-out for coming to the rescue last week. Some really (profoundly) crappy things happened to me without any warning last Friday, and despite me specifically telling him that I would do VNTS, when he saw that I was gone and wasn’t going to get to it, he stepped up and wrote it for y’all. I’m sure I speak for all of the thousands of VNTS readers when I say, “You’re a true hero, Decay! Thank you!”
Please notice the all-new formatting of the “Other Licensed Translations” section and compliment me on the hard work. Please. I hate HTML, and I did it for you, dear reader.
Personal Reflection time: It amazes me, sometimes, to see how many people tune into these posts each week. We’re gaining more than a hundred new recurring visitors with every post, and most of them return three out of every four weeks of a month. Heck, some of you have been coming around here since 2014 when Zaka would post a mirror of the /jp/ VNTS poster. It’s hard to believe that my new-fangled posts only began in March, and yet we’re consistently bringing in thousands of unique visitors every day of every weekend. When I started these new VNTS posts, you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting two or three doom- or nay-sayers who didn’t think we could make anything of them.
And yet, here we are. And that’s pretty damn cool.
This week’s header image comes from Higurashi When They Cry Hou – Ch.2 Watanagashi to celebrate its release! Get the game here. Have a nice week, everybody!
Harumade Kururu translation:

Ooh, good luck and I hope it will be a worthwhile experience for you guys. 🙂
Highschool Romance=Shrek dating simulator
you made me spit the juice I was drinking
Sir, looks like Seinarukana is making some progress. Should just be a matter of time (looking forward to it myself). 5 days ago, JAST posted that they’re Finalizing materials, preparing websites. QA checking.
any news from subahibi?
still no update for daitoshoukan TT.TT
I don’t know if Mangagamer has not gotten around fixing it but it actually seems (currently) that Gahkthun is also going to be released DRM-Free. This is big news if true because those of us who refuse to buy games with DRM will actually be able to pick this one up right away instead of waiting for a physical release.
I think you guys have made a great contribution in expanding the audience of fans of visual novels.
If not for you, I probably never would have read a lot of good and interesting visual novels. I come here every Saturday(in my time) from the day when I found out about this site to find out the news and what you think about them. Also I suggested your site to my friends and they are now doing the same.
I think you’ve done a really good job and I hope that you will continue the same way. Good luck and keep up the good work.
P.S. sorry for my english if i messed up something.
Thank you <3
No, thank YOU! =)
I come for the commentary myself. I wasn’t aware that the new Starcraft II expansion had released, so that’s what I took out of it today.
Any particular reason there aren’t VNDB links on the jast/mg/etc titles?
Another fabulous week, another week that serves as a reminder that I have a bunch of games on the backlog I NEED to read.
I think the week of Thanksgiving is going to be super busy…
I see progress in Irotoridori no Sekai, I’m so happy :,)
SIr, i want to confirm something. Is tasogaredoki no kyoukaisen project dead ? There is not any progress for more than a month
Who knows? You’d have to ask them, not us, but they aren’t answering anyone in their comments. Hopefully they’ll show more signs of life soon but right now there’s been an unfortunate amount of inactivity surrounding that project.
Irotoridori, Koiken Otome… ohhhhhhhhhhhh <3
Yeah, I said was probably too pessimistic a cpl of weeks ago already.
There is still no advance on Amairo. Just remove it from your list, so I can get calmness finally ;(
Well, sorry to say but your unease seems unlikely to end any time soon. Team members have apparently been working on it all this time, but the project leader seems to have vanished. He made contact a couple weeks ago but seems to have disappeared again. There’s a lot of confusion within the translation team right now, it seems. You can get up to date information here: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/5263-amairo-islenauts-translation-project/?page=6
