Visual Novel Translation Status (05/11/23)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold.

Hello friends! Yes, slap us out of existence — we missed a week. It happens. Zaka started a new semester and got overloaded with assignments for his thesis thing and thus there was no time to prepare a VNTS, especially since the week had been extremely busy. However, this week we’re actually covering two weeks in one fell swoop, so already prepare yourself for a longer post.

Lately, lots of interesting movements are happening, but they’re not worth mentioning yet. It does feel that we’re soon able to cover more ground when it comes to Japanese releases and AVN. What’s AVN you say? Well, there will be an article coming next Monday by one of our newest trainees.

So far, we collected some great feedback for the new website and worked out some kinks. Like for some reason our captions were buggy due to a CSS issue with center-aligned content. This should now be fixed. On another note, our content became much more diverse — a consequence of there being a general lack of news in the coming months. It’s looking quite dry so far.

Without further ado, let’s get into the VNTS.

Hello, it has been a week and now we have a mountain of releases to cover. So let’s get right into this.

Akatsuki no Goei ~Tsumibukaki Shuumatsuron~ has been slowly making progress. I have to admit that I’m less interested in this game these days and check the Daybreak server less and less. There’s no particular reason for this though, just that I maybe wait for the whole trilogy to be our before trying to get into this. It could be that Bee is still hanging around in Japan and thus only has the occasional Starbucks break for translating. Not sure.

Chusingura does like hundreds of lines of progress per week. This is also not too bad. Quite enjoyable and might line up with the titles whose curses will finally be lifted soon. There’s more of this kinda in this VNTS, if I may mention so.

Another vintage title was released, this time its Dead of the Brain, a genuine zombie apocalypse game – quite the rare genre! The only other zombie apocalypse games I can think of are I walk on Zombies I Walk Among Zombies, you silly goose -Zaka and Aoi Sora no Camus, at least among those that I tried out. DotB released right on Halloween and was thus one of the most topical releases. However, we already knew about this release since the start of the month because one of our new writers JackDBS was involved in editing for this game. Jack will provide us with a more detailed analysis of the process and the game soon, so we can just wait and see what the team, WINE (wait, who names themselves after a Windows totally-not-an-emulator for Linux? -Zaka), had to face when working with an old title like this.

Fate/Extra CCC is aiming for release by Christmas. If you scour Twitter you will see that the CCC fan translators are cooking up some hype for the game. I find it amazing that 2023 is the year in which many long-term projects might find their closure. It really makes you think about how far we’ve come as a community. Sadly, I know nothing about Fate/Extra CCC, but the translation examples make me hot to try it out!

Haruka na Sora published an update that they’re currently at the stage where the Kozue route is translated 60% and Sora’s route (the only route people apparently care for…) is at 90% editing. From what I heard about the YnS/HnS project the turnover of new staff is high as always, so prepare for another translation project that’s pretty much a mosaic of many many many contributors. I’m losing hope that this will turn out great, but I can read Japanese anyways so I can just switch over. Fans of the franchise will be happy. And the Trjr team got some other ideas cooking as well.

The last week’s VNTS also listed Shangrila 2, but not Rance I, how weird. Either way, seeing another elf title in English after recently Dragon Knight 2 has been fan-translated already… Man, this year’s honestly nuts. It’s Alpharobo, BabaJeanmel, Kirinn JackDBS and many others from the PC98 Central discord that are keeping the momentum going. I’m hopeful for more. Check our article above for more information.

Tsui no Sora Remake made a post with an update around Halloween that said that they’re at 67% translated and 56% edited. Phantom and Ribbi are working hard on this it seems. They also made a post on twitter showing off that they’re currently working on the Yasuko route – the best one. Prepare yourselves for the true origins of Ayana, the threat of real yakuzas and Yasuko’s VA stealing the show. But this was honestly not the only update about a Scaji game that saw the light of day…

Just a few days ago, a Sakura no Uta fan translation suddenly appeared on VNDB without any forewarning. The person who submitted the edit was someone called Love40, a pretty inconspicious name which we wouldn’t have found until floatingtrash, a high-frequency VN reader and instagram content creator, made a post about it. This “Love” person then eventually responded to this a day later and now it’s official: There’s a new attempt to translate Sakura no Uta in progress. The last one was actually a not-so-funny-anymore crowdsourcing attempt by Voldemort (Gambs) which obviously became a failure.

Okay, this was a lot of unofficial stuff, but there’s even MORE official things happening. However, the releases number going off from last week to this week only increased by one. 8 releases were still quite a lot… What a busy week, followed by a dead one. Cool.

HuneX released Hana Awase New Moon last week. This was a game announced at AX2023 and enticed me with its hanafuda type gameplay. Unfortunately, I picked already another otome to play during the end of this year and that’s going to be Virche. Hana Awase might be cool for next year.

JAST had actually nothing moving at all this week. However, there were the VenusBlood Hollow Fandiscs that made another successful Kickstarter and proved to the world that good coordination and management will fund your game. More people should learn from the way they conduct AND advertise theirs. However, JAST was boothing at some conventions recently, pretty cool.

SekaiProject had two updates and one release. The updates were about Animal Trail Girlish Square 2 and My Academy’s Special Place which are both waiting for Steam approvals. The big title for them this week was Usonatsu ~The Summer Romance Bloomed From a Lie~ that had a Steam page showing it would release on the 6th November. Thankfully they did manage to release the game on the 3rd November like they promised. Apparently, Steam has a convoluted process to change release dates on already published Steam page, huh. Either way, Usonatsu is now out and was quite well received. Our reviewer Yuzurity is still on a vacation trip, so he can’t cover it right on release, but it will happen somewhen during November. You can check out Nook’s review on the game already if you need one.

Next, there’s Irotoridori no Sekai from Nekonyan which finally got into QA and its Steam page was published! We covered this game in an article, but had to realize that the character descriptions on VNDB were quite bad and full of typos, prompting us to re-edit the post. This article caused us, and especially KevinNGW808, some headaches, but it’s fixed now. I’m quite proud of the localization history part that we could discover for this game. There’s quite a few contradictory stories surrounding the title. Also it might be interesting to learn that this game is the very reason why NekoNyan exists.

Frontwing released Ginka to great acclaim and it could become one of the more successful VN launches in a while. It has a white haired heroine, so this will definitely entice some people who already invested in Cyanotype Daydream because it had one. Reviews for the game are rather lukewarm, but they state that the game is by no means bad. There’s just some pacing issues here and there. Everyone lauds the production quality and so do I. Does Konno Asta ever miss?

Age/AnchoR has been shooting themselves in the foot with another weird decisionmaking process surrounding how they want to handle the Kiminozo localization. Apparently, some bad endings with a character called Hotaru get cut. If you want to know more, wait for our article on it. In the meanwhile, you can also check the official English announcement for this … situation.

Fakku has been brewing interesting stuff recently. Apparently, since Meru took hold of the position as the Director of Games over at Fakku’s game department, they’ve been quite busy. Two Beasts Or Not To Beast!! is currently in editing and a new game by Orcsoft is also in the localization works. It’s basically Nope Nope Nurses just from Orcsoft: Forbidden Ward. I hope that they adjusted the font size because Orcsoft games are practically unreadable in Japanese unless you got a huge screen.

Next, there’s some announcements by Saikey Studios. Since they’re all nukige with hella long titles I’m just going to link them. They got all NTR in them, yadayada – we know.

Taninbou de Ikikurui Kairaku ni Oboreteiku Saiaizuma
Natural Corde -Aiyoku no Iro ni Somerarete, Watashi wa Arugamama no Jibun ni Naru-
Shin Hoka no Otoko no Seieki de Harande mo Ii Desu ka…?

What’s more interesting than these releases is that Saikey Studios apparently made enough of a buzz that he’s listed on VNTS now separately. Gotta see if this continues and how long a business running both in the fan translation and official translation space can stand tall.

Shiravune’s next and they’re blowing out releases like candy. Last week it was Taimanin Asagi and Tenioha! Mami’s Little Sub, and this week it’s KuroInu Redux 2. Thankfully, we’re given a lot of time to prepare for these games, so we got a KuroInu Redux 2 review already in the oven. Let’s see if this can go out today… Oh, they also announced My Slow Life with the Princess Knight and Her Devoted Handmaiden for 2 days after my birthday and the formerly “leaked” Succubus Sessions: Mami Mamiya’s Sweet Slice of Hell will release somewhen in 2024… Okay? Now present the next year’s line-up already, Shira!

From the big company PQube, there’s Archetype Arcadia now out. I’ve been hacking away at this game for a few days now and it’s quite the exciting dark scifi story. It’s long, however, so I got no clue when I’ll be finished with it.

Aniplex announced Hira Hira Hihiru to release on the 17th of November! Sirus, who played the demo months ago for Fuwanovel, will be glad!

The otome publisher/development studio Voltage has released even if TEMPEST Dawning Connections, a sequel to even if TEMPEST to great acclaim. This release is special because it’s pretty much a simul-release, something you literally never see with a company like Otomate or what other otome companies are out there — It’s either a mobile game with worldwide release or asynchronous releases.

Entergram released Aquarium. for the period of the missed VNTS and Vtuber fans can rejoice. You can hang with Minato Aqua, Fubuki AND Houshou Marine. Is there anything better? Yeah, for example they could’ve had Okayu or Patra in there. Not that I’d play even then, but still. -Zaka

After a long silence since their recent “triumphant” return from death, Mikandi Japan actually gave a Halloween update for their retranslation of Libra of the Vampire Princess. They did already test the translation and it seems to meet their quality standards. Now they’re just waiting for a Steam patch to be made and are currently testing it.

Lastly, there’s Tamaoka Soft who self-published SEKAI/SUBETE, an interesting looking title. Sadly, they admitted to “not be confident in the translation” which can mean they either MTL’d it or translated it from scratch by themselves which could’ve been disastrous. I won’t buy it, however.

Okay, finally we’re through. This took long enough. Excuse me now, Attack on Titan has finally finished its anime and I finally get to watch it. Been breezing through the first season and am halfway through the second. This week will be a pure AoT marathon so I can also complain or applaud the way they handled the ending. I’m super pumped for this. Byebye, my stream has finished buffering.

Zaka is a big gay.

Za Zaka-tan

「Hata is a big straight into my butthole. Wait, where was I?

Having completed one of those funny “resets” people like me do to sync up with a world stubbornly advancing at a different pace than us, I am writing this at four in the morning. As usual when Hata writes first, there’s not that much left to touch on. But perhaps there is a bit more to say.

First of all, one of the things Bee did in Fapan was visit the Akabeisoft 2 offices. Something tells me there may be unexpected technical issues before the release of the patch. Those in the know will understand.

Second, if you look at the vndb for Dead of the Brain you will see an earlier MTL. At the start I was wondering if this was just a port of that translation, but the current project is not based on the MTL according to project member Jack, so rest somewhat more assured.

Third, Shangrila 2 is “Shangrlia 2on vndb. As you can see from the cover, this is not exactly wrong, though Shangrila was probably the Japanese intent; the katakana pronunciation given certainly is hard to get a “grlia” out of. It reminds me of good old “Harlem Blade“, which is similarly unlikely to be a reference to the NYC neighborhood. I think the only truly respectable display of English ability I’ve seen in a visual novel was in Oshi no Love yori Koi no Love where at first this schoolgirl writes some cute grammatically questionable English and you think it’s just going to be accepted but then the older girl was like “bitch your eigo is shit” and corrected her mistakes. Rarely have I felt such a connection to a fictional character. Otherwise a funky title with some weird choices, and reading the ‘bonus’ ero at the end — which needs a patch for Steamgoers! — is practically required to have much of an ending. medium rec for yuri fans I guess. Okay I don’t need to write a review anymore now feelsgoodman.

Also, I’m having a hard time deciding whether this Shangrila map screen is intentionally suggestive or not.

Usonatsu is out, but on the JOP-only horizon we have Hayasaki no Kuroyuri, which seems to be a title that bothers some of the yuribros. I’m always excited to play things out of the norm, so I’d give myself a 5% of completing it at some point. That’s a lot higher than anything else, okay? I didn’t choose to be this dissolute of a character, except all the times I did of course. Fuck.

My final detail will be on Sekai/Subete. It’s looking pretty tragic on DLsite with just 38 purchases (matching the publisher’s predictions), though I can’t recommend it for anyone reading in English since the translation is probably pretty bad; even the official account worries about the quality after all. It’s sad, because the title looks interesting and actually features a protagonist in university rather than high school. If you happen to be a JOP, though, the title actually seems to have gotten a decent reception back in the day:

There’s an old version up for sale on Amazon, which is where I found this review. Two of the three reviews just complain the game doesn’t work on their system and there’s no support to be had, so this is what we’ve got. The review mentions that it displays the classic VN tendency of having a central heroine the story is written around with the other heroines being bonus material. It also says it was quite well received back when it was released (2002, though madokami knows when the collector’s edition featured on Amazon was — the other reviews are from 2012). Apart from that, apparently it’s not just set in Kansai, but actually features the real dialect with proper pronunciation rather than the hollywood version you usually see in Japanese media.

Alright, that’s all I’ve got for today.」

I’m not entirely sure if the protagonist in Sekai no Subete is a university student or if the story takes place within a university. I know the description on dlsite says otherwise, but those images scream highschool to me. In the past, I have seen attempts of translators/localizers forcefully changing the setting of a story to the university a few times, probably because a highschool setting indicates the possibility of characters being under 18 (claiming that all characters are above 18 in a disclaimer doesn’t seem to be believable enough when heroines are in high school, who would have guessed…). They also seem to have tried to release the game on Steam, only to be rejected. It appears that their attempts to forcibly change the setting to university in their translation were not enough.

Note: I haven’t read vn, and this is simply what I gathered after a cursory glance at the vndb and dlsite pages.

For those two weeks, I only slightly interested to both Ginka and Usonatsu with both have quite good graphic. For Hana Awase, while I knew it’s already released, I still wait for Mangagamer version. No much comment on the releases besides those three other than those’re quite small to me. Lastly, here’s my VNTS Review for this week and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
