Review: Queen of the Otaku — Cosplaying Manga Club Cuties!

Imagine if, instead of being filled with fat dudes who smell really bad, your school’s manga club was filled with two super-hot girls (and a bunch of fat dudes). That’s kind of what this game revolves around!

Queen of the Otaku: THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE, localized by Shiravune, is a nukige developed by Appetite in 2020 and released in English and Chinese on July 18th, 2023. And what I described above is exactly what you get.

Out of the box, the Steam version cuts out around 80% of the game and essentially accomplishes nothing as a story, so you’ll need to download the patch from Johren in order to get the full experience. Queen of the Otaku features rather pretty and cute art from Suzunone Rena, and apart from that boasts a few different routes and multiple endings.

Unsurprisingly, given the title, most of the fetish content in this game revolves around cosplay, even going so far as to include an entire set of scenes in what is essentially Comiket. There are quite a few H-scenes, and even several non-H event scenes, which is a small upgrade to your normal nukige.

In general, the story revolves around the two girls in the club, Hanasaki Mahiro and Himeki Ai, and the choices you make throughout the two-hour game will affect who ends up becoming the metaphorical namesake: “Queen of the Otaku.”

Seeing as this is an Appetite nukige that already reuses all of the soundtrack from their previous titles, it’s kind of obvious that the story isn’t going to be anything mind-blowing. With that being said, however, it is serviceable, with hints of S&M throughout, and the scenes leading up to the sex scenes progress nicely, so credit where credit is due.

Generally, if you enjoy nukige or cosplay sex, you’ll probably enjoy this, and with such a low price tag, what’s not to like?

All in all, it’s a decently rounded title. I’m just happy there’s more than one ending and it’s not linear. It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed something non-linear. Kind of a nice change of pace.

You can purchase the game on Steam (and the patch on Johren for free!)
