Visual Novel Translation Status (30/07/23)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. This week’s cover will add even more games, namely Venus Blood GAIA Intl., THE SHELL and Sugarsweet Temptation because all of three are highly relevant releases of the week. The thumbnail will be supplied by our freshly promoted Fuwakai Member Fujoneko again!

August started and what was this last month? Actually, not too impressive on the industry side, since Anime Expo had already swallowed all the hype that the month couldn’t live up to it. However, we finally made some impressive progress on the Fuwanovel Team Management side with now a flawlessly working writing and editing process, high quality articles dished out by the day – everyday – and upgraded visuals and subheadings due to Fujoneko’s tireless GFX work. We’re looking for more GFX specialists to alleviate Fujocchi, by the way! And I’m looking for a GF who enjoys me looking at screens instead of her as if we had some hot 放置プレイー (Neglect Kink) going. Well, a man can dream.

Today, we pray that the Sirusbox may also happen, since he just had been promoted to Fuwakai Member as well, albeit to take over the backend duties for Fuwanovel, so we can finally work on our tool- and value creation. He can also dish out VNDB Auto-Fetch programs in a matter of hours, but he can talk more about this himself. Btw, he’s French!

「The time is 22:31 and I don’t even know if Hata will be awake to include this. I don’t know if I will be awake to edit it in. A strange weariness has crept into my bones, uncomfortable yet familiar, a dark blanket on the senses. Don’t get old, people. I’m 32 and I hate it already.

Something else that feels old by now is the long-awaited effort by Sekai Project to unfuck their Hoshimemo translation, done at last and included with their HD rerelease of that same title. Sometimes, it’s all good when people go back and revise their work — none of the previous translations had much grace, so it’s nice to see an update. A revision less people found pleasant was the one made to Hakuchuumu no Aojashin, with its creator being rather clear that they’d do what it took to get their story on that bastion of Western morals, Steam (proud seller of Sex with Hitler). But it’s not like the alteration has to be bad — the one person I know that really went through both seemed to prefer the all-ages version for having less of an h-scene spam ending (while finding several problems with the translation that I bet no outrage-monger has ever commented on). I have to say though, as a man of somewhat coomer mindset it never quite sat right with me to take it all out. Surely you could’ve written it to have appropriate spacing, a proper ending, and preserved a little two-dimensional pornography still. I mean, I refuse to play Island or Summer Pockets because I know they tease but do not deliver on the sex. Maybe the problem is with me. Though I’m absolutely fine with something having no porn if it isn’t taunting me. I don’t know, man. Is this how those NTR-sensitive gentlemen feel? Probably not.

In any case, there is now a new option for the English-dependent in the audience: a restoration patch. I have to say, it’s pretty soulful — the translator on the project goes on to say he prefers the new version of one scene, so that one’s included in revised form. If it wasn’t clear, I completely approve of this little caprice; ultimately, I want the best version. And of course, what’s best for me may not be what even the author thinks — remember how Spielberg made Han shoot last? Heck, who even decides what version is definitive? I’m not going to say the author is plain dead, but he’s just one of the people we should listen to. And sometimes both options lead to despair — I wouldn’t have blamed anyone for picking the old Insem translation over the old SP translation; both the F/SN translations in circulation are pretty cringe, in rather different ways; heck, which parts of F/SN are best with the porn in and which with the porn out? Even without translations, we are left with such unsatisfying choices sometimes. Can’t someone like, hack Japanese Dies Irae so you can pick what version of the scene you want? And fix the text censorship the English version mercifully cuts out. And… man, I don’t know. I’ve released fix patches for several obscure VNs myself, I know it’s doable. Autists of the world, where are you when we need you the most? Is CoZ hoarding half of you? Are the rest really all working on the latest iteration of the hyper-mega-ultra-final-supreme F/SN patch thing???

Ahem.

Apart from that, Chronos Rebellion releases, apparently. I think I checked out of the Grisaia franchise around Phantom Trigger, so I haven’t a clue what it’s about. I do know that it used to be a mobile game; on one hand, it feels good to have the text freed from its exploitative roots, on the other, usually the writing for those is kinda dependent on the structure, so I don’t know… Well, I guess if it’s anything like Heaven Burns Red there would be no issue at all.

Aksys has released otome VN Radiant Tale, so I guess we’re at the midpoint of the Aksys Cycle. Wish you luck, otome gamers.

THE SHELL is Shiravune’s fancy new title for their release of the HD version of Kara no Shoujo (Kara no Shojo — The Shell Virgin — in MG’s title due to blasted American Vowel Erasure¹). I’m sure most people care more about the graphic and voice actor changes, but personally I must point out that the new translator is probably worse. The KnS translator, Apoptosis, always seemed to have a good reputation, while GundamAce… well, he’s readable.

Oh, and uhh Venus Blood Gaia might be big for some people. I heard the gameplay is a bit different in this one compared to previous ones translated, but I don’t know? Amusingly, there seems to be a mix of versions out with the main difference being “edits to a [flag with elements resembling a swastika“. I have to say it’s a little tenuous, but I suppose you have to stay safe these days. Maybe Hata’s will be happy he can buy it in Germany. Or maybe it’ll still be just as impossible, lmao. 1. To be honest, the Japanese do this too in some romanizations, though I don’t know if any are official. Maybe the one on passports? I just know I hate it with all my soul.

You probably don’t know me as I have joined the Fuwanovel staff not too long ago, but I will be helping with the dev side of things as well as some news, technical articles & reviews from time to time, so look forward to lot of cool stuffs in the future!

There’s not much this week in term of fanTL, the same projects as the last few weeks are progressing steadily.

I’m glad H2O √ is progressing well, because as it stands the south of France is running out of groundwater. By my savant calculations, the QC will be finished in 5 weeks at this rate of progress, so maybe a surprise for September?

Fate/Extra CCC is making some good progress, I bet the people who actually read this stuff and not just stare at pictures of Saber (or Rin if you have good tastes) all day will be very happy!

An unofficial restoration patch for Hakuchuumu no Aojashin has been dropped, restoring 18+ scenes and fixing some localization it seems? I have yet to play this one but I’m intrigued, but anyways it can only be a good thing, because fuck censorship.

On the side of the official releases, there’s actually quite a few of them.

Grisaia: Chronos Rebellion came out, a port of a mobile game. It looks nice, too bad I haven’t played any game in the series, and by the time I’ll get to it there’ll be 30 more titles to go through.

There’s also Radiant Tale, otome gamers are really eating good lately. I feel like I’m gonna become diabetic just from looking at Sugar Sweet Temptation screenshots, and it seems to be yet another generic moege. Succubus Sessions: Mami Mamiya’s Sweet Slice of Hell, which was supposed to come out this week, has been delayed to September; really love the art on this one, I hope the delay doesn’t mean there were huge TL issues, and if there are, that they will be fixed in time!

One of the most awaited release is probably VenusBlood GAIA, which had a very successful Kickstarter with a quarter of a million dollar in contributions. I can only approve more of these types of SRPG being localized, despite just a glance at the UI is making my head spin.

And finally, the release everyone was waiting f… Let’s be honest, I doubt many people were waiting for it, as the original TL is already more than a decade old and everyone and their mom played it. But anyways, as I was saying, the one and only Kara no Shoujo, or “The Shell Part I: Inferno” as they decided to name it for some reason, is now out. It’s a complete retranslation of the FULL VOICE HD SIZE EDITION, and the whole series will follow. Quite frankly, they should have started from the end in this case, as I’m sure quite a lot of people are waiting to read the third chapter. Now, let’s go back to the name. The shell? THE SHELL? WHERE DID THE GIRL IN IT GO? This rebranding is on the level of Twitter becoming X, and I can’t help thinking of Phantom of Inferno when I read the subtitle. I guess that it can be forgiven if the TL is good enough.

Tomorrow is the release of Mandemon (which has been pushed back 24h, or some time zone shenanigans?), I’m excited to play and review it. You should totally buy and play it too, it’s super cheap! The art looks gorgeous for an indie game, and despite the solo developer being Chinese, this one releases with Japanese voice acting. I’m not sure if the developer is proficient in it, I just hope it’s not a case of shaky TL. I’ll try out both the JP and EN and stay with the one that reads the best.

Okay, this is alright now. Let’s see what the others had covered alre… Oh frick, they already went over everything twice. Guess, I’ll do the same and add some shenanigans and pepper some Fuwanovel meta information in.

Okay, so we’re beginning with Akatsuki no Goei ~Principal-tachi ni Kyuujitsu. Just post VNTS release on the chans, the Daybreak lads posted an update on their website. Bee has finally found another opportunity to translate VNs in official capacity. This will slow down the current pace at which the projects are going. Doesn’t really matter since we know that a passionate TL like him will push this trilogy through – or perish.

Tamago Lemon (which I for some reason kept always pronouncing as Tama Golemon) has released another big oppai game patch, this time it is Shabura Rental – A nukige by Atelier Kaguya Honky… BonkyMakonkyWonky… Tonk Pumpkin. Ok, the company name isn’t that messed up, but AK-HTP is still a mouthful. Well, what enticed me to look at that game was – as you may tell – the big boobage that you were greeted with once opening the tumblr page. But since the previous game had like titular 48 booby women, I guess 4 that may boobily boob down the steps will make the cut too. Either way, Kyonyuu Fantasy Series is this the goat in that subgenre anyways.

Talked about Grisaia: Chronos Rebellion before, but I just want to add that our currently newly hired Editor Ryechu – yes actually the former Fuwa Reviews Chief – is now back at Fuwanovel and supports us with designing a new style guide, so our articles may look even better in the process. He has edited this game together with Kitty! This is pretty crazy, considering Grisaia is such a big name. If I ever have copious amounts of free time (mission impossible lately) I might play the series.

Merucchi released her new game Sugar Sweet Temptation and it’s one with Miyasa… uhhh… Shiratama! artwork. (I always mix this artist up with the artist for Love’s Sweet Garnish…) I wish, she could bring us Hoshitetsu eventually. That game is nice!

The big title that everyone’s excited for is Kara no Shoujo‘s Remake (named THE SHELL) by Shiravune. That game will probably mean so much to people who love Sugina Miki and the other InnoGrey IPs. However, I would implore everyone to play Cartagra ~Affliction of the Soul~ before THE SHELL. Actually, it is not relevant to understand the game in itself, since the stories in Cartagra and THE SHELL are entirely different, but it does become important as Cartagra ties and references so much in Kara no Shoujo 2. This was discussed in the community before, but here’s a thread on VNDB showing one of those discourses.

I have a tiny trauma over some past drama that happened over Venus Blood games, so I will refrain from commenting on this release. The staff is good, the kickstarter went amazing and a staple for this medium, sales will probably be good, tutorial will suck, Dungeon Simulator gameplay will be difficult, casuals will play on Easy to be able to experience the story, Fateburn will be relieved that its over and probably start up the next project soon. Eushully never, even if gameplay keeps being successful here.
