「I’m lucky we’ve got actual things to talk about this week, given that I spent like half of my accumulated Rant Content in shaping my upcoming opinion/analysis article on why I hate freedom. I must admit, this morning (17:15) I am feeling kind of dead inside, probably because it’s the morning (17:15). You know, Halloumi is genuinely a nice food and with a nonstick pan it’s literally just slice and fry, you should try it if you haven’t. Half a centimetre thick slices, not too long on each side to have a bit less chewiness, very nice. Hata asked me for a food channel on the Discord once and I said I’d post my culinary memes like this fascinating combination of high-quality sausage and spiced chickpeas (honestly not the worst):
Anyway, I turned him down because you have to turn him down 90% of the time so you can accept the good 10%. Much like I’m turning down the 2 unread messages from Bee presumably asking me for translation advice (this is a good thing and should increase your respect for him) so that I can write this commentary. Holy shit I’m getting all stream of consciousness here. Reminds me of how what the most sad visual novel someone had read coming up as a topic on some server (after linking le reddit having a funny opinion at last rather than katawa shoujo) and Kira Kira and its crappy translation came up. Someone should give some people I know a million dollars to retranslate it and give Setoguchi a little more justice honestly. Anyway, where was I… Oh yes Setoguchi is known to do stream-of-consciousness writing sometimes. That’s how those threads connect. You’re welcome.
CHARON is an interesting brand where they have quite a lot of free VNs out but most of them these days are paid. The theme for CHARON-ge usually is girls with severe mental issues, horror, death, you know all that good shit. I only played² one and I think it had some structural issues but it was a pretty early one (Makoto Möbius). Unlike their official translations, the new fan translation of Haitoku Shirene has a possiblity of being okay, I guess. I gotta be honest I didn’t check it, though I did note that TyranoScript seems to have the same thing as Kirikiri where you can easily get the base game by just renaming the patch file. Kind of slick honestly. It means that translation prepatches also work as distribution for the original, so JOPs of negotiable virtue can easily acquire an untranslated version even when nobody is providing the Japanese version anymore. You might think this has no legitimate application, but did you know that our english Ichigo & Kyuugo release is based on removing the patch file from the Russian translation? Literally couldn’t find it any other way. Though I feel like I did find it another way in one of those archives of otherwise removed media but just deleted it beforehand, so rip me. Adding all the details really spoils a good narrative, doesn’t it?
Gears of Dragoon 2 is by Ninetail, who also make the Venus Blood series. Well kind of, for some reason they have three different “tail” brands and I haven’t the faintest why. I’m sure I could figure it out if I tried to, but I think it’s funnier not to know. Spoil my fun by telling me in the comments! Damn now I sound like a YouTuber. Uhh like and subscribe to our mailing list (wait do we still have one of those? fuck.)
Anyway, I remember discussions back in the day as to whether the Gears series was even commercially viable, given that they’re pretty old and low res or something. It looks like after several VB titles, ninetail has taken the plunge and now we’re getting another series. I feel entirely unable to comment on these given that I took one look at the UI of the first VB they put out and noped the fuck into the atmosphere, but I’m sure someone with a different brand of autism than mine will appreciate their localization.
Norn9‘s fandisc is on its way. I wonder if they picked the same translator that did the retranslation for Norn9‘s Switch version (quite needed as the previous one was rather funky and actually really did the thing where they changed character’s personalities, rather than just made anti-loc zealots think so after looking at DeepL I imagine there were other problems as well.)
WHITE ALBUM is out. But if WA1 is so good, why is there no WA2? And more importantly, will shiravoonay actually find someone capable of translating the pretty writing in WA2 with appropriate panache? I guess if nothing else if their job is really shite we have a fan translation already.
Kagitori‘s translation is as kuso as everyone expected.
Enjoy the Diner looks like a pure adventure game and I don’t really know why it’s on this list. For once the Steam description looks decent even though it’s indie. I guess having a publisher that does other shit than VNs helps in that, maybe? It started out as a free game made in Godot which you can still play in Japanese here, though this new port has more content. Speaking of things being on lists, Gnosia was taken off vndb the other day. It’s kind of hard for me to comment, given that I never read it, but I never heard anyone have the sentiment that it wasn’t a VN. I do think that vndb’s “narration” criterion feels more than a cope than anything else, but I also understand that they have a hard job since they at least have to pretend they don’t go off of vibes. I certainly was never very interested in it myself due to the looping and likely repetition of the find-the-culprit gameplay. Shrug. I guess Read Only Memories is also on vndb, which is kind of funny.
To finish it off, Witch Knight Anna promises a “world of futanari”. Some kind of gameplay eroge thing. I wouldn’t count on the translation being very good, one Steam review even calls the localization “incomplete: and complains about bugs. Another says the story is surprisingly deep, but the account had 4.4 hours played. Sounds kinda weird. Still though, full futa eh. I guess you just can’t beat the dick. If it’s not your own, that is.」

Another week, another VNTS. I’m really happy that everything keeps going great with Fuwanovel and that we’re already 2-3 months into production of new posts. The forum and some other cool things will be next. We might have the allowance from VNDB for a FuwaDB kind of thing too. Everything’s fantastic!
I’ve also been involved in a project that will change the course of the western nsfw scene, been sitting in meetings and business negotiations every day. It’s taxing but rewarding. Also, I’ve been scouted for a cool server for translators & localization staff. The perfect networking opportunity for me, if I didn’t have 1000 friends on Discord 🙁
Now I just need to brush up on my Japanese, so it actually can match up with these amazing people.

Okay, let’s start with the BIG title of the week, WHITE ALBUM 1. This game released on the 4th of August 2023 to big fanfares and it has to fulfill some big expectations. It’s a game about music, a game about relationships, a game about life – wait, that’s the second game? Uhhh… It’s a game about music all the same!
Well, we can’t have a new Shiravune release without people getting their panties in a bunch over the lack of honorifics inside the game, so someone called JuicyStandoffishMan produced a de-localization patch in the matter of a day or two. Those who need it can run it across their game, I personally do not – even though I follow the stance that honorifics CAN be retained if the story takes place in a Japanese setting. But not everyone agrees with that, so I won’t declare it as a dogma.
Can we please stop calling patches “de-localizations”? It’s getting frustrating, broski dudes.
H2O passed the 50% mark for QC. This is still progressing at such an unbelievably even rate. I’m eyeballing that this game may release this autumn or even in September. Such insane consistency.
Haitoku Shirene English Patch, hmm… Well, I’m not too well versed in CHARON titles, but we have Fujoneko on staff who loves the games by this developer. Sadly, she’s too busy to actually write the Fujobox today (lol is this a BL merch box subscription?) and thus I have to do my own part. This game apparently is much lewder than other games by CHARON, so much so that one dude on VNTS 4chan said that we’re living in bizarroworld right now. I will eventually check out all these games, but I rather wait for my Fujocchi to review them and enjoy the funny yandere times.
Gears of Dragoon 2 is one of those games that I have super high hopes for, because the it is a Ninetail game I may actually comprehend and can play on a higher difficulty. The Venus Blood Games always have really tough and nebulous tutorials, but this game actually seems much more straightforward. This is definitely a buy. We should also get either Metarail or Ramaladni on these games to review them. Might be a good idea.
UsoNatsu will be something very surprising to the scene. A yuri game this beautiful hasn’t been released since Flowers Winter. Well, maybe Please be Happy or Yoru, Tomosu may top this. After Yuzurity, our resident yuri expert guy, posted his article on the game, I went to the discord of LYCORIS and informed them of the coverage. Now we have some good contacts to them and we maybe able to organize some kind of promotion for the release of this fantastic looking game. But here’s the tweet my brain has created, while keeping the general yuri scene in mind. The last quote is related to a controversy about Gundam. You may check out Paddy’s tweet here.
Aikagi After Days will release on the 25th of August 2023. I like Frontwing, but they have to do Sharin finally. People are waiting and waiting and they’re also losing support by some of the companies they work with. My female intuition tells me that – or some secret knowledge.

I may call Cabbit was always got shady companies to translate their VNs, although maybe the word shady is too strong for the new company. In fact, they’re more like not quite fluent in English and has no clue that several publisher released 18+ patch outside Steam.
As for the biggest release of this week, White Album, well obviously don’t expect WA2 drama seeing that Maruto (WA2 writer) thought that WA is quite bad with the exception one plot point that he worked hard to make it more dramatic in his game. Oh yes it has no sex scene, although it’s because Shiravune released PS3 backport version. The 1998 version has sex scene, although obviously the graphic is quite outdated.
