Visual Novel Translation Status (17/09/23)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold.

It was a weak week for releases and VNTS, but another strong week for us. Fuwanovel actually makes some good progress with its secret projects and the management of the team goes much more smoothly than ever before. We have a two-digit amount of available drafts being produced at the same time. Also we had to remove some team members due to long inactivity and general disinterest in contributions and found replacements rather quickly. Until the end of the month, we have to cut down the team to its active core and then present a new team page, full of amazingly talented individuals.

Anyway, let’s talk about the VN scene:

The Zakabox

「It’s weird what the slightest changes of your environment can do to you. I’d been keeping my chair higher up, for a hopefully more ergonomic typing angle, and maybe there was something to that — but it always felt so tense sitting at my desk. And uncomfortable in other ways. At last I relented and tried a lower position, and everything just feels so much more comfy now. Maybe I’ll get some proper use out of this thing yet. I still desperately need a new desk, though… ah well. I must say I find it funny that Hata saw three releases this week and thought it was weak and unpog. Remember when we had no release weeks? Zakamutt Farm remembers.

You know, that reference I just made makes me remember that Hata didn’t get what “drink the kool-aid” meant the other day. I had to look that up too once upon a time, and I wonder if my personal opinion on cultural references in translation is influenced by how I feel about things I have to look up in general. Certainly, it can be annoying to hit on an unfamiliar word or reference, but when you look them up there’s often something interesting behind it. Did you know that there’s this nerdy expression called “on the gripping hand“? Its inspiration is a science fiction story where an alien race has three hands, and they call the third the gripping one. It’s used when you do the usual “on one hand… on the other hand” construction, but feel like adding a third thing to contrast with.

So I guess I’d say that on one hand, finding stuff you don’t know can be frustrating, as you have to break your flow, but on the other hand, it’s a good opportunity to learn something new — and this happens all the time with Japanese, so in some sense you’re actually replicating a part of the Japanese learner experience when you hit on some American pop culture reference in translation. On the gripping hand, there are tasteful and not-so-tasteful uses, and often you can write in a way that makes a reference easier to get the gist of without actual research. Though madokami1 knows it’s not going to be written with any of that in mind in the original language. If you’re serious about getting everything, you’ll spend half your time reading Voynich Hotel in Japanese trying to find out what the fuck shit like ガキ水 is referring to (a long-gone joke drink associated with a TV program and some TV personalities; it released in 1996. It was intentionally designed to taste bad.) Anyway, I think someone needs to invent an iconic fourth fictional hand, because just three parts clearly don’t cut it anymore for me and my galaxy brain. Fuck.

Anyway, rant over, let’s VNTS.

Kaseki no Uta is at 100% translated. It looks like two VNTS ago, it was at 80.3%, meaning they did ~3000 lines in ~2-3 weeks. It’s not a crazy speed, but it’s certainly fast. Or just diligent. It’s crazy what I could do if I actually just translated every day. Unfortunately, we can only be what we are. Though I do still think I could be a bit better than what I am… but oh well.

Sekai de Ichiban Kanashii Egao, translated as The Saddest Smile in the World by Shinzou Translations, is out. While the prose of the description they wrote for their previous translation showed lacking compositional ability, and some images in the gallery of our post on the translation show similar tendencies, I suppose there’s always the Spanish version. Or you could just have lower standards than me. It’s not particularly hard. But could they really not at least have fixed the midheight ellipses? Jesus.

Shiina Maho no Himitsu ~Name wa H de Omoitsukimasu~ is another release we have reported on. Man, I love just having these to link to so I don’t have to look for myself. It looks like one of those standard single-heroine moege with a lot of porn that you’re not quite sure if you should call nukige or not. I note that Hau Omochikaeri seem to have mistranslated the tricky アパート as “apartment” where it likely really means “apartment building” in this case. I once used “super” in a translation thinking it was an acceptable shortening of “supermarket” (thankfully, my editor caught it), so I can understand the error.

UsoNatsu ~The Summer Romance Bloomed From A Lie~ is now in QA, which as we know is actually the most important step in the process as the average consumer won’t see nonobvious mistranslations and stylistic awkwardness but will murder your whole family if they find a single typographical error. I hope it turns out well, it looks fun.

Animal Trail Girlish Square 2 is in QA, together with a fandisc for the first in the series. As it is a Whirlpool title, I will refrain from describing it so as to not give the illusion of it having meaningful content.

Ginka is Frontwing’s new all-ages Konno Asta (Atri, Konosora) story. It has a fancy OP, though I must admit it didn’t leave much of an impression on me other than “Wow, you have art in a modern moe artstyle. Also the story has characters. What a surprise.” But maybe I just wasn’t paying attention. Atri was fairly appreciated, so maybe Asta can strike gold again? Who knows. See our post from earlier for more details. Also, let it be known that I detest the American-ass shortening of “Ryuusei” to “Ryusei” to an irrational degree.

Lies as a Starting Point is out, not to be confused with UsoNatsu. My only really comment on this one earlier was that the Steam description was a cringe translation. I hope the contents aren’t the same, but I do not predict my hopes will be fulfilled.

Phew, that’s all the news for this week. Now to give the stage to my overly detailed footnotes.」

1. While I imagine understanding of this one will be high since a lot of you are quite into Japanimation, this is a reference to dark magical girl anime sensation Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. For various reasons, a portmanteau of “Madoka” and the Japanese word for “God”, kami 2, is rather natural to use for those who have watched the show. Personally, though, I’m compelled to use it as a replacement for the more mundane deity by my virulent atheism. Though I did watch madomagi. I ship madohomu btw, I’m very basic.

2. My autism compels me to add that if we want to be precise, this is often used for “spirits” or “small gods” if you will, not just Big Gods or The One God or whatever. Also, you can call things “kami” to mean they’re awesome or godlike whatever. The weeb dialect has many quirks.

HataノHako

「Okay, I’m a little exhausted today, so my commentary will be less big funny but big tired. We discussed a ton of interesting things among the team and also started our Vtuber-management adventure as well. After an initial pilot stream with one of our Chuubas, we did realize there needs to be more preparation and maybe we better don’t stream games right in their kickstarter phase because it puts people on edge. Think on your own what that means. Hail Madokami.

Okay, so the first VN I want to talk about is:

Kaseki no Uta which I never paid attention to in the last weeks. Now it reached 100% and is apparently a fan translation by Muv-Luv Verse, a Russian group. If I think about this, there had been this crazy Russian Muv-Luv Alternative fan who once asked me to proofread/TLC one of his subbed trailer videos. He spoke of the Muv-Luv Universe in a very grandiose manner and I unfortunately do not remember much more. Must’ve been around 2020-2021. If I can find them again, I invite them to Fuwanovel so they can hold a Muv-Luv Trivia battle together with Sharingan and Slankbot. Maybe Sayngelic as well, fr ong.

Next it’s time for Sekai de Ichiban Kanashii Egao, a game by a circle called ->Quantize_ (yes, spelt like this). The translation was created by the Alexeir and his team, the guys behind Shinzou Translations. There were no English screenshots out there, so I had to download the game and play some of it myself. It’s a bit too static for my taste and there’s too few sprite variations. Also this is quite long for a game this static, like up to FOUR HOURS?! (Angry Joe Reference). The backgrounds have the typical style of a real-life photo and some grainy filters on top. It looks common like free indie actually looks. I have to add that when I posted this someone, there was a response like: “Wow, I love Shinzou! They actually bring these obscure indie games over in English!” – Well, wait until they hear about Insani or The July Society, right?

Next, there is Shiina Maho no Himitsu ~Name wa H de Omoitsukimasu~ which was shadowdropped by someone from Tip Your Landlady TL on 4chan. It was promptly ignored there and decried as MTL from some of the users before they went back to their daily chatter. We found this quite mean and gave it some coverage on Fuwanovel. The game looks quite gorgeous and it apparently is a cohabitation romance with someone who draws erotic manga. I am familiar with a setting like this, but Shiina Maho does not look like a stale Eromanga Sensei type deal. She feels more assertive and a better partner.

Next there is UsoNatsu ~The Summer Romance Bloomed From a Lie~ which has gotten an update on the Sekai Project page that it is now in QA. We kind of expected a simultaneous release, but this was too much hope. It only really matters for our reviewer Yuzurity, because he absolutely can’t wait to play this game. And besides a possible review of the game, we might have another really epic present for him and fans of this game. Is it a giveaway? A Meet & Greet with the developer? A personalized Broski in the script? No!

Some more Sekai Project updates have already been covered by Zaka’s thorough coverage, so I don’t need to talk about them anymore. My eyes are also really drooping now and I need to get to the end. What else is there?

Actually just Ginka from Frontwing. Well, I’m not hyped for any FW release right now that is not Sharin no Kuni ~Himawari no Shoujo~. But Ginka looks good and has a great production staff. It will definitely be well received.

Oh ye, Cherry Kiss has a new game as well. Another round of dicking down women, yaaaay~

Haishin 2 will come out next week. Sirus has already written the news article for it ahead of time, so I already saw some of the CGs and animated sequences, but I can still contain my hype. My rating of the first game is pretty harsh (4/10). Maybe I should replay it? It would be a cool game to play with our Vtubers together, actually.

We might do that.」

At least the art from Animal Trails are quite nice. That said, my attention is not on both releases and announcements anyway (Although I like Ginka exact release date announcement), but instead is about Yuzuki’s route in Ginharu finally under QA which if I’m right is the last step. Here’s hoping that we can have Yuzuki’s patch release by Christmas, even though I know we may have 2024 release of we’re being realistic.

Oh yes here’s my VNTS Review for this week and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
