Visual Novel Translation Status (10/09/23)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold.

Hello, here we are again. Lately, we’ve been slacking a bit on the VNTS side, so it comes some days late. But we might be able to get this on the road again if we happen to start earlier. This week we posted a lot of bangers on Twitter and got a lot of range off that because we actually bought a month of Twitter BLUE to make our Anonymous;Code review get around easier. And it was worth it.

There have been a few releases recently, some controversial, some long awaited and the scene is developing healthily. I look forward to actually have some time again to play some of the recently released titles. It’s a wonderful time to be a VN fan.

Without further ado, let’s go get it!

The Zakabox

「Mind blank, head empty. Only VNTS now.

Gensou Rougoku no Kaleidoscope is a rather intentionally constructed title, producing a fairly natural Japanese shortening to gerokasu. The original title is at least moderately fancy, meaning something like “Kaleidoscope of Fantastic Prison“, but if you read that four-mora shortening, you get the rather more prosaic “pukegarbage”. Having read the nonspoiler part of this review, the contrast between outward veneer and dirty private reality seems to reflect the scenario Ryuukishi07 of Higurashi and Umineko chose to write. Perhaps, however, he was not so good at following through. The current vndb vote graph is one of the wildest I’ve seen, with a very wide spread to its distribution. I guess the real question to ask yourself is this: Do you feel lucky, illustrious VNTS reader?

2023/09/12 Vote distribution of gerokasu on vndb, showing a center on scores 5 and 4 with 8 votes and tapering upward towards two 10 votes and four 9 votes, while having four 1 votes and five 2 votes.

Tooko has released H2O (with all the fandisc trimmings). Imaimo didn’t seem too bad bar an unfortunate lack of confidence in rather low-risk localizations at one spot, so hopefully this one is decent as well. I remember one of my friends thinking the fandisc content literally made the rest worse just by how bad it was, but his opinions have always been a bit galaxy brain, so who knows.

Majikoi A-5 is out. At last, the EOPs can have the finest grade of Majikoi steak on the charts. I hear the marbling is exquisite. Certainly Minatosoft can’t have been cutting any fat given how many releases this comically milked series has. But maybe that’s what you want.

Latest Sci;adv entry ANONYMOUS;CODE got a positive review by one of our lads. Though he starts out by saying it will likely be divisive, so maybe check if you’re being divided first. Generally the blade enters below the ribcage for less resistance, so I’d monitor that area for signs of bifurcation. Consider yourself warned!

I feel like Criminal Border was already announced, but maybe I’m going insane. Same thing for CRAFTWORK’s long-awaited new effort Geminism. It’s fun to see some weirder titles making it, even if one is by somewhat quality-optional1 Shiravune and the other has no clear publisher.

Lies as a Starting Point, which is not UsoNatsu, is out. It didn’t really seem that remarkable to me earlier, and the Steam page had cringe tl on it, so god knows.

Haishin 2 is the sequel to Haishin, or Livestream: Escape from Hotel Izanami in localized terms. Staff opinions on the first VN seems to vary, with us having a “not recommended” brief curator review out there but also a member on staff who seems to like it more than that. We’ll see if he ever writes his full-length review :>

In Japanese, “Haishin” is actually written not with the characters for “broadcast” 配信, but with the ones for “ruined deep” 廃深, which can be said the same. Considering that’s the full length of the title, the kanji pun here is probably less indicative of any deep meaning (it sounds like the kind of dumb pun I’d come up with on a lark in 3.5 seconds), and more to have a name nobody else has a claim on. Oh, and so people can even search for it. I’m looking at you, Mahou Shoujo. At least your remake is more search engine friendly with the addition of shinsetsu 新説…」

1. One may argue that this aptly describes every publisher.

I’m Criel. No wait, I’m Hata… Now that I found my identity and voice again after having fallen sick last VNTS, we can talk about important stuff again. Well, as nice as the Connichi Weekend was (write the fucking con report Hata!!!), the wind hit me like a truck after roughly three days of viruses incubating in my body. I contracted AID… a very nasty cold. However, despite nearly dying due to being unable to breathe properly that night not much else has happened. Having survived was cool though, so I could keep experiencing more of “Love and Marriage with the Fuwanovel Team”. Ehem… Let’s get to the VNTS content. Awooga!!

Okay, what a week: Quite the few surprise announcements among them that could turn some heads, like in the case of our first specimen here. Gensou Rougoku no Kaleidoscope, quoteunquote 07th Expansion’s worst game has received a rather unfortunate console version translation that takes a hassle or two to run on the platforms the patch was made for. It’s a 99,9% probability that the acquiring of this game with working patch was done by grabbing it off the truck in motion.

Sadly, this wasn’t the only sad reaction I had to this patch, but due to people with a semblance of authority tweeting in very agitated manner about this game, the entire When They Cry fandom on Twitter and Discord collectively lost their shit. The reasoning why they did that can be found in our article that will funkily release a day after this VNTS – we definitely know scheduling!

Here’s the big guy. The H2O fan translation from our forum members Tooko and NReus, yeah they translated this entire game with two people in total, made it public. A few days earlier, I posted their 100% completed translation sheet on twitter and people became excited. The actual release post happened a few days after the release of the stellar patch due to Tooko needing longer than a female-coded individual in the bathroom to send me some screenshots of dialogue sections. Thankfully, he eventually did and presented its best side. Usually there are always people complaining after a new fan translation is released and try to downplay the achievement, but the only thing the chuddies could muster in frustration was “H2O is such an easy game, you could have learned Japanese regardless!!!” The copium levels are immeasurable.

Majikoi – Love Me Seriously!!, a game which tested my skills as a QC back when I worked with JAST, has many parts. Fantranslation wise, the game was already far ahead of its official counterparts and thus they reached Majikoi A-5 now. What sounds like a German autobahn name is actually another fandisc for Majikoi enjoyers. Dowolf (Bro is a speedrunner now???) worked on this again, a guy known for his Majikoi translation work for 9 years now and also had involvement in the official JAST project together with some editor dude I forgot. Dude, I miss that time…

Sekai Project will release another nukige from Orcsoft/Dwarfsoft imprint on the market. It’s coming out on the 22nd. Orcsoft girls tend to follow a rather unseemly design philosophy both visually and in personality, but the intercourse balls quite hard. Nukige friends will enjoy this, maybe.

The big one on the official side this week is ANONYMOUS;CODE, a game which we already got ahead of time and loved from start to finish. Review scores are very much unreliable on Fuwanovel, so we don’t use a consistent scale but the production values in this games are literal godmode. I did hear in one dissenting comment that there is some religious note in the plot around chapter 4, but I’m not a science purist that expects the game to choose science or faith. How about having faith in science instead? Oh, I also kept listening to the game’s Soundtrack all the time when I’m not listening to people of different nationalities caress my ears (ASMR addiction fr ong…)

Criminal Border is a game from Purplesoft, it’s their sixth western release actually. It’s episodic, so I’m only interested once the entire series is out. It probably has the potential to do well, similar to how people expected Meteor World Actor to perform.

Sadly, CRAFTWORK delayed Geminism again. Actually for multiple months. My telepathic x-ray time gapping abilities tell me it has to do with the translation that’s supposed to be releasing at the same time. I would love to be able to interview Nagaoka Kenzou. We have DM’d on Twitter before, good guy and sleeps a lot. Oh, speaking of which… We have unearthed a guest article draft about a certain SayoOshi related item that we wanted to release many years ago, but since the article contains a multitude of highly precise Kanji translation tasks it will cook for a few days. Stay excited though, it will be something new on this site!

I might add something that we stumbled across just yesterday. Apparently, someone has ported the old ass Kindan no Ketsuzoku to another old ass platform. Something for y’all old ass gamers.

Okay, that’s it for today. I love Fuwanovel and I can’t imagine anything cooler to spend my time on. We’re definitely gonna make it to the top of the world.

Oh btw, here’s some dum motto ideas for a potential re-design. It will come fr ong istg.」

I really like the first one.

This week is quite interesting with Majikoi A-5, H2O, and Anonymous Code release. Honestly speaking I have no much to say here beside that Shiravune might be better to just throw very obvious line so there’s no disappointment when the announcement didn’t match the expectation, although I need to get used to Criminal Border art. At least Nine staffs got working on this, although the writer still can’t make the whole story arc from the beginning.

Oh yes, here’s my VNTS Review for this week and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
