Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. The cover for this week is Makai Tenshi Djibril because we want to honor a certain demon loli’s taste in localization projects.
Anime Expo 2023 just concluded and everyone’s on their way back home again from the 5-day long event. I have never heard of a convention that goes on for this long, but anime is definitely growing enough to warrant such a prestige. While the Fuwanovel team hasn’t been there collectively, we have sent out a representative press reporter in Maiagaru who went to visit a handful of relevant panels held at the convention. In the meanwhile, the rest of our writers have been sitting at their desks, recapping the contents of the panels as well as they could manage. To summarize, MangaGamer and JAST USA had the most relevant announcements, followed by FAKKU. Sekai/Denpa had only sparce announcements and Spike Chunsoft went down the shill route for their two games featuring the word “Code”.

「I glaze blearily into my monitor at 5:20 a.m., looking at the VNTS post. Even VNTS himself posts late at AX time, though this year he could have gone without it as Sekai and Denpa announced little of visual novel interest. At least the rain outside is soothing, though the way it feels like an eyelash has stuck itself directly to my eyeball cuts against the effect. Why do we live? Just to summarize translation progress? I guess it could be worse.

I instantly feel better! Alright, let’s get into the titles. First, this one-heroine moeg… wait a minute, you’re telling me this 4700-line VN is a love triangle thing? Surely it’s not serious. Anyway, best of luck to the guy working on Aikano I guess.
The Chusingura project has released a partial, apparently. I haven’t seen a single screen of it, so god knows what it’s like. I like the dedication to the bit before they disappear at 85% though. Or maybe they’ll just finish, but disappearing at 85% would be funnier so you know where my hopes lie.
There’s some kind of quintuplets vn being worked on. Apparently the manga has a bad ending or something, so it’s a good thing I quit reading after like, chapter 20. I remember reading the manga (untranslated, naturally) on my phone while in Crete. I guess there were decent parts about that trip too.

H2O is getting close to done, bar any technical issues of course. Though I’m not sure if there would be anyone that would buy it if they tried to sell out.
I always thought what the translator picked for their 101 no tame title translation, “101 ways to kill yourself“, sounded a bit too blunt and not like a nice title. After speaking to the translator, though, they actually wanted the kind of rough and in-your-face feeling it gave off, which is fair enough. The tl;dr is it matched the game’s vibe to them. Having not read it, I shall believe them. Honestly I feel a lot better about the whole thing. Maybe it shall be alright after all.
“Kashidashi Kanojo” oh it’s an NTR game. Whatever. “Shabura Rental“, riveting. Tsuma Netori…. you know, I guess it’s actually more remarkable these days when someone is manually translating one of these. Well, we can always hope they’re doing it manually.
Umikara is back on the board. Kusarihime is not on the board, so I guess it’ll be done just before Shinimasu in the end.
Oh, and there’s this title that VNTS put there confusing it with my project. Whatever. Watashi o Kawaii to Mitomenai Yatsu wa Bukkoroshimasu ne eh. This looks like one of those things people translate for the meme value. But I could be wrong.

Mojika – (A-) A lot of people seem to have been disappointed by this one but the demo all those years back was quite fun. The true ending is a bitch to get from what I remember. It was actually on my eternal backlog, though not very far up.
Sisters – (B) Funnily this together with Shinimasu was once the starter Japanese language VN meta in this one server thanks to my shilling. And now both are getting translated. I swear it’s JOP erasure. And I’m just as much to blame. Anyway, I never quite got how much this was a nukige but it has like full animation or something which is sweet.
Paradise / Masquerade– (BL) these ones are interesting because Shingakkou is considered BL kamige and PIL/SLASH released that one too. Apart from that, BL ge tend to be rather dark and plot-centered, and these seem no exception. If you’re not afraid of the cock, there could be some fun stuff in here.

PQube joins the fray with Archetype Arcadia, which looks really interesting. It’s by the writer of Sasasagu, which has gotten a moderate show of shilling in JOP circles. Zack doesn’t give me great confidence, Blick is okay, I guess the translation team could be worse. I will give this one an A.
Hira Hira Hihiru – This is Setoguchi’s newest apparently. Interesingly it’s credited to the same doujin group, BA-KU, with which he made Black Sheep Town, his latest VN before this. That one was about the Chinese mafia, this one is to be set in the Taishou era it seems. You may know him from Kira Kira, Musicus, and the JOPs moaning about the translations he gets. Honestly, they probably have a point. I read a bit of the start of Kira Kira in Japanese and it’s fun and well-constructed, though not in like a flashy way. I have to admit, I don’t know if I trust Aniplex with this. Though I heard apart from the odious romanization scheme Mahoyo was okay? — honestly, it’s probably just going to be random if something they put out is good or not. Which brings us to Tsukihime the remake, I guess. It was kind of weird to see Mahoyo and not Tsukihime done, but I guess that’s now been rectified. Overall, hard to not give the actual titles an S.
DLsite, oh dear. Wouldn’t trust their translations. Friendly labis BL from the same company that released totally-coming-out-any-millennium-now luckydog1, but they don’t seem to share writers. Guess this one gets the BL grade too.
Iffy has Charade Maniacs, which somehow both has a spoiler right in the cover booklet or something like that AND the more mundane cringe engrish translation we apparently must expect when otome is involved. Unfortunate, though really when your nickname is “Iffy”, at some point you have to wonder if you’ve slid into nominative determinism. I’ve heard hamefura described as more of a friendship simulator LN, so I wonder how that works out in VN form. Sympathy Kiss… moege. This is moege. Fuck it I will give Iffy a B assuming the Hamefura VN will be interesting somehow.
It’s 6:30 a.m. How am I still writing this. The Birds chirp merrily Outside, but I am chained to this Wheel. A Wheel of my own Making. MAMIYA is a Sequel I assume and I think I probably should have checked out the Original but like I didn’t. Wow, Even if tempest has some high Scores on vndb. Looks kind of interesting. Looks like what Voltage is doing now is a Fandisc. Huh, I thought Voltage only did terrible exploitative Mobile Games. I guess not entirely. From Madness with Love has an interesting Aesthetic. Looks kinda Omori. Though I must admit the Adjective-Like Word that bubbles into my Brain is “Tumblr”. Not necessarily a Bad Thing though, I really liked Undertale and that thing is hella Tumblr. A nameable Protagonist, though? Nevermind, put it under C for Cringe automatically.
Oh, and some cringe Japanese Company decided to make a cringe Translation using native Japanese with a questionable grasp on English again it seems. They have named it Kagitori -Bird in the Cage Hiding the Key-. I don’t know what I expected from Cabbit. An F is too good a Grade. Have a Z. And you know what, please prove me wrong, Mr. Shumpei Nakajima. Make this a good Translation.

「Memo to myself, when you coerce Zakamutt to write the VNTS at night time, you can expect a whole load of gimmicks being integrated into his writing. This adds a lot of humor, so this might be the best time to do it. Maybe he was just extra motivated this time to write in a delirious state, I can’t really tell. I’m writing my VNTS at 9:10am after taking in solid 8 hours of sleep, a very rare thing for me. Still gonna swallow a caffeine pill for productivity reasons…
Okay, so we have AX 2023 week and for some reason, the VNTS creators decided to elongate (not to be mixed up with #Elongate, referring to the man destroying twitter #TwitterIsDead) the VNTS content with more companies that usually didn’t find mention or were just listed in the “Other” category. So bear with me, this might be longer today
Aikano ~Yukizora no Triangle seems like an interesting title to pick up as a fan translation. The artstyle actually blows me away, might be the way they use light accents and make the characters glow. The writer was involved in some HOOKSOFT games, so he can probably write cute stories. The fan translator is JuicyStandoffishMan and the project was first announced almost a whole month ago on reddit.
Fate/Extra CCC is finally progressing, even the translators themselves acknowledged that it took a while for them to continue. It’s a good year for TYPE-MOON fans, the community is more active than ever. I just hope that this will not suffer the same Fate (lol) as Mahoyo and Tsukihime: Remake, people working their ass off to get a fan translation out and then TM changing their mind and actually localizing it officially. It happened twice now and I’m not surprised if it would happen a third time.

Jisatsu no Tame no 101 no Houhou is an amazing project to pick up. The translator behind it is denpaarchivist, some guy (likely a fudanshi) who made it his passion to archive obscure denpa visual novels (for an introduction to Denpa check this article). Cheeky as I am, I immediately grasped the chance to hire him for our team, looking forward to what kind of articles or opinion pieces he might produce. Either way, I’ve grown addicted to Satou Hiromi’s song “Hikari” thanks to a stellar AR8 osu! reading map, so I’m super looking forward to experience “THE GREY” in English.
We skip over the three Nukige projects, since I’m still mad that one of the nukige I fan translated never saw release. We still have the script lying around, lmao. Let’s move on to the official announcements, Anime Expo, the goated event of the year:

We’ve been busy covering the AX 2023 announcements with multiple team members, and I took the task to cover the MangaGamer one, so you will find my more detailed opinion in that article once it goes live. Lemme just sum up their panel with one sentence each:
Hana Awase: MangaGamer going all out with the multi-platform release is nice to see!
DEAD DAYS: Played it and it’s awesome, albeit one of Kurayashiki Tatsuya’s lesser works.

Gears of Dragoon and Venus Blood Gaia releasing about the same time, I think. This is pretty great for gameplay fans and JAST didn’t disappoint with these titles before, so they won’t either here. Still wonder if the editor for VBG isn’t someone I knew under a pseudo…
Goblins on the March: Breed All Humans, a goblin nukige I suppose. Goblin stories need some epic openings by Mili to be impressive to me. I might look at it, maybe.
Yamizome Liberator, my boy Floatingtrash will have a field day with this one. More Mahou Shoujos on the table. I don’t know who remembers, but I was the one who QC’d Yamizome Revenger entirely on my own. These games blend so many different gameplay systems and have such complex UI structures that it was a true pain. The real pain, however, was QCing the 120 H-Scenes of varying levels of intensity. I remember having done these in a three-day hentai gauntlet, I don’t recommend doing them in a marathon! Eventually you start hearing moans coming out of your walls… :baobao: Working with BishounenP, Hubb2001 and whoever was the translator, was a pleasure though!
Mojika: Truth Rears Its Ugly Head. I’m sure everyone was surprised at this one, but I wasn’t because JAST wasn’t exactly subtle in keeping this license under covers. They excitedly teased it on discord since 2022 in cryptic ways. Well, it’s finally here and while I don’t agree with the title they ultimately chose – as its WAY too artsy – its better than the attempt to localize the “Mojika” word itself. Like, what would we have done if it was really called Letterization or smth… (they talked about the difficulty with choosing a title during the panel, check it out here.) Either way, I have played Mojika before and the apt description I can make is that it’s a dark Clock Up game under a Nitroplus mask. It’s extremely depressing to play, even if you aren’t the most ugly motherfucker who can identify with the endlessly bullied protagonist. It puts you in difficult positions to be in. There’s also a folklore element tied into the game, but that would lead us too far. You should be warned though, there’s a route with genital mutilation, which might even cause palpable pain to the male player since JAST games are fully demosaiced. (Marklords rejoice!)

I absolutely don’t have any contact points with Djibril, but I can tell that a certain demon loli project manager workaholic must have pushed their contacts to Frontwing REALLY hard to get this license. JAST BLUE
Masquerade and Paradise, huh… Well, it’s not Shingakkou, but at least PIL/SLASH is getting some love in the west now. There was actually a statement at the panel about the difficulties to get Shingakkou ~noli me tangere~ localized and just like with Majikoi: it’s financing the voice actor royalties that are holding the project back. Might be worth considering a kickstarter for it since the BL community will absolutely fund this in a tizzy. There’s no doubt they will for such a legendary title by Kusaka(be) Matsuri, the writer of Gore Screaming Show.
Sekai Project/Denpa
Probably, the most disappointing panel of them all, since they had barely anything new. On the other hand, they still have the entire feng library in their grasp and are working hard on getting all these games localized. I actually managed to relay this question through on of the people streaming the panel for our discord viewing pleasure, Guzidi, and they gave him a satisfying answer. I just wanna play some more feng-ge like HoshiKake. Well, we’re getting the newest Neko-Nin exHeart and Harvest Festa isn’t forgotten, I guess.
Fakku
While VNs and games in general weren’t the focus of the FAKKU panel, they still announced something. Two Beasts or Not to Beast, a furryge that’s actually furry. I warmed up with Furryge through some Liar-Soft exposure, so I’m fine with that.
PQube
When I wrote a news article about Archetype Arcadia, I called the localization team stacked because it contains Steiner, Blick and ZackZeal, but I heard that BUSTAFELLOWS who had the same team, featured some really bad comprehension mistakes and general technical shenanigans – the latter likely to be attributed to the JP side – so my enthusiasm got a bit more restrained. I still enjoyed Sasasagu (played the fanmade PC port) and I believe that Water Phoenix has the potential to tell great Sci-Fi Stories. Super looking forward to this, maybe it keeps the JP text option intact?

Aniplex is actually a great player and while they fucked up the availability of their first releases Atri & Adabana Odd Tales in Europe, I can forgive them. Hira Hira Hihiru‘s demo was actually reviewed by Sirus on Fuwanovel, so check that out! Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- being officially localized was the most surprising moment of the AX, imo. For some reason, they cut the stream short however, totally messing up the marketing. (VN-YouTuber SleepyCrest was all enraged about this fuck up on twitter, lmfao.)
Kinda sad for the Tsukihimates team that their patch probably has to be taken down once the game’s official localization becomes available, that’s what the fan translators codex says and they better adhere to it to not draw the ire of the community. But maybe the official localization sucks? Mahoyo‘s wasn’t perfect either. We have to see.
Idea Factory
They’ve been announcing more and more otome. In fact, given how many fuckin’ otome we covered recently, it feels like this is just the future the market is headed now. Otome games are super popular with a fanbase who ACTUALLY go out of their way to blow copious amounts of money on Limited Editions and physical purchases. Honestly, companies like JAST would do themselves a favor to roll out an otome branch considering how massively invested the fanbase is…
Enough rambling about the projected profitability of the otome market, back to the announcements: Charade Maniacs looks so incredibly cool, the Otome Flag VN also entices me, I think it had an anime series that was widely popular, too? And Sympathy Kiss is another more light-hearted Otome. Tbh, all I want is Tokeijikake no Apocalypse, that one’s my greatest wish! We should finally setup our Keymailer for IDEA FACTORY, so our many otome writers can be supplied with ENDORPHIN inducing review copies, it will happen, I swear.

Edit: Zaka wanted me to troll in this Article with the German Noun Capitalization, but it is way too much Work to rewire my Brain to automatically capitalize English Nouns. I still believe that German Capitalization is the way English should also adhere to, but the Anglo-saxons’ Language Preferences are Inconsistency and Sloppiness after all. Could just be Solipsism, though.

At least if a project dies at 85% you don’t feel like they are making fun of all people waiting for that, unlike a project dying after reaching 100% in translation, editing, tl revision and image editing.

Honestly speaking, outside of Ixseal, Liberator, and Yomegami (With the former two can be said as nukige), I did find that this year AX is plain with Sekai didn’t manage to bring their interesting announcement (Admittedly Nekonin Spin might be longer VN with three heroines, but surely Sekai can do better than that).
Anyway my VNTS Review for this week below, and sorry for being very late. I hope that you’ll enjoy it.
