Hey everybody, Tay again. Yesterday Dizzyworld2 posted some information on the Fuwanovel forums about Key15th’s new documentary Kickstarter. Key15th (the group behind the coordinated-outreach to Key, celebrating the company’s 15th anniversary, and seeking more localisations) has this to say about its project:
The money raised from this Kickstarter will go towards funding a documentary which will explore the real-life locations found in works from KEY / Visual Art’s. Key is the studio responsible for productions such as Clannad, Kanon, AIR, Little Busters!, Angel Beats!, and Rewrite. Specifically, it will allow three team members (Clannad Man as host, a videographer, and a guide/translator) to travel to Japan for 17 days to seek out Key-centric landmarks and describe the history and significance of these areas.
Besides the documentary, the Kickstarter also features a reward item that’s sure to appeal to a lot of you:
DIGITAL ‘REBIRTH’ MUSIC ALBUM: Quite possibly the greatest collection of anime music cover artists ever assembled. To support the funding of this documentary, talented musicians from around the world offered their time and talents to create arrangements from each of Key’s productions – Kanon, Air, Clannad, Planetarian, Tomoyo After, Little Busters!, Angel Beats!, Kud Wafter, Rewrite, and Rewrite Harvest festa. Musicians range from the highly regarded Kyle Landry, Animenz, TehIshter, and The Setting Sun to lesser known artists from around the world who give the album an ethnic flair. (A larger partial artist list can be found in the FAQ section below.) Their arrangements are exclusive to the ‘REBIRTH’ album and cannot be obtained outside of this Kickstarter!
There’s plenty of additional information on the Kickstarter page for thsoe who are interested. One more important note: Dizzyworld2 provided the art on the T-shirt and album cover. Way to go!

$20,159 as a goal sounds pretty steep when factoring in the target audience is fairly niche. I know he has to factor in travel expenses, lodging, food, etc. etc. but I’m still shocked a video documentary in the year 2013 would amount to that much money.
I felt the same way. I still plan on donating — it’s a cool idea, and the album sounds amazing — but it’s certainly a stretch.
Would donate some money, but sadly my bank account show’s only single digit number ;__;
I personally don’t really see the point of this… Pretty sure you can find all the information you could possibly want to know about the locations by searching on google. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if videos already existed to “document” said locations too.
Imagine someone wanted to know about Abraham Lincoln. You could go to Wikipedia and read an article on him, but is information presented in an interesting way? Do Wikipedia articles inspire people to probe deeper?
A documentary itself, even saying stuff people already knew, if presented in a certain way, can be pretty entertaining. Plus, it’s something you can share with people that aren’t necessarily familiar. It gives a little extra public attention to something that’s been such a niche interest.
Although, I can’t say for sure whether they’re going about it in the right way. :/
yeah, I agree with yue. If you are a fan you probably already dug all information you could.
I don’t see a point in supporting this. If it was some localisation project or a new game that’s a different story but this…most of us don’t care for documentary. 🙁
seems to me like sponsoring someone to his trip to Japan, shameless to me. also, there may come an issue of copyrights when someone tries to monetize Key intellectual property. I think this project could do some serious harm to Key and visual novel community and therefore it’s it clear NO from me.
I personally think it’d be cool if they did a kickstarter to license the VN’s and such, I mean, the guy is in charge of the localisation of previous translation works so the translations are all there… that said, I can understand it’s much more difficult to get that kind of idea up and running.
