Visual Novel Translation Status (30/10/22)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. Today’s cover image is Shinsou Noise, the biggest of the new announcements by NekoNyan they did at Awacon, as already teased last post. We could have also picked the Onigokko Fandisc, but a major title like that, don’t tell me twice!

Hi, Hata here. After last week’s VNTS really went above and beyond with the length, we’re going to keep it short today. We’re currently working on a couple new services for Fuwanovel that will become relevant in the near future and me and Zaka also were guests in a particular format just yesterday. We’ll announce what it was right after it will be released, approximately next week. Without further ado, let’s get right into the VNTS content.

The Zakabox

「Hi everyone! This week, most of the action is in what the official locs are doing. I do want to give a congrats to the Kusarihime translator, who’s finished every H-scene script except “the one I saved for later”. Good for him! — he thinks the full first tl pass will be done in a week or so. Also things are looking up for Bee too as he’s getting to translate some edge finally.

JAST is releasing Gore Screaming Show on 11 November. The Steam version will be a Subahibi-like affair in that most of the game will not be available without the patch. Also I think JAST announced the Onigokko FD or something, but honestly I’d care more about a new flavored filmjölk release. And I never have flavored filmjölk.

Sekai brings us news of Leyline 3, the last part of the series and apparently the most pog, as well as Hoshimemo Eternal Heart (the FD), which I was half expecting them to try to stall as long as possible after their kinda cringe Hoshimemo tl (that they seem to still be working on revising? ah well.) Well, to be fair they did stall pretty long already, and they did promise to do it as part of a stretch goal they hit during the Hoshimemo Kickstarter way back when, so maybe this is just their limit. Even WEE physicals are actually getting delivered to people. What a world we live in! Tenshinranman though? I heard the situation for that one’s even more fucked, so who knows.

Speaking of titles where I was wondering if there’d ever be progress, there’s also Dracu-Riot progress from Nekonyan! Though looking at the previous VNTS, looks it had already shown signs of life before. Man, I really was out of it for a while when I stopped posting this thing… Ah well. In like a year, I won’t be washed up anymore. I hope. Basically everything Nekonyan has made progress except the Aoi Tori engine work (always a nebulous one) and the vita exclusive content to be added to Fureraba. Wonder how that one’s going…

But enough of that, Nekonyan announced 5 titles! Let’s give them the Zaka hype meter (it’s very finely calibrated because I don’t really get hype anymore)

Moege (no reaction):

My Klutzy Cupid (Ore no Cupid ga Ponkotsu Sugite Kowa~i.) (5 writers listed and somehow I know none of them KEKW)

Love Love Love, Burning in my Heart! (Baka Moe Heart ni Ai wo Komete!) – I actually have this on my vndb wishlist and I don’t know why. Probably some JOP I was following thought it was unusually fun. Clephas called it a “true comedy vn” a year ago (please be aware that the main blog this is on is basically a guy using MTL for everything to give shallow opinions. He’s a bit weird, but he’s not breaking any rules… Ah well.)

Koichoco (Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate) – This one is mostly notable for getting a delicious Verdelish translation to replace the probably not amazing (this is Triplicate by the way — translator of hoshi ori) fan tl previously available. She’s found some depth in it, but I know from experience that you can find near-fractal depth in what you translate, so I’ll still put this in my moege bucket. You can tell me how wrong I am in the comments.

Maybe not entirely moe (neuron activation?):
Ready or Not: The Deadline is Coming! (Uchi wa Mou, Enki Dekinai) – I think this one might be a be a bit more interesting. I don’t really know what I’m basing this on, so it’s 100% guaranteed to be correct.

Not Moe (neuron activation!):
Mysteries of the Heart: The Psychic Detective Case Files (Shinsou Noise ~Jushin Tantei no Jikenbo~) – I’ve heard mixed things about this one, but the fact that there is a split in opinion probably means it’s interesting, at least. Apart from being Not Moege, it has art by the Euphoria artist, which is quite nice. And the chubby girl’s kwi. On the translation side, I saw that it was being translated by bango and felt the usual thing I feel when we get ESL translators, but then I noticed Fred is editing it and honestly that probably compensates for it near entirely. Fred the Barber edited the first fan translation I did (The world ends tomorrow) and I think he did a great job. Did you know he used to post to an editing-focused blog on the forums, by the way? There’s much of value there, still. Check out Darbury’s blog too if you’re into that stuff. Uhh, I kind of got sidetracked, but anyway this is the one truly interesting Nekonyan title announced for me.

Apart from that, it looks like Nekonyan will be using the assets from the upcoming HD rerelease of Iroseka for their release. It’s nice to see that the Western release probably won’t be overly gimped.

Alright, moving on from ol’ Kittymeow Translations, Alpha Nighthawk is out. I think Hata might have a bit more to say about it, but check out our earlier VNTS for what we had to say when it was announced (Hata actually played it in Japanese!).

Gachi-Natsu seems to be manly gay porn (you know it’s yabai when you can’t open the Steam page without logging in. I’m in awe at the size of these cocks honestly. Not to mention how finely grained these mosaics are), and it’s self-published by the Japanese company with all that implies for the translation quality. But it seems to be mostly made for the porn aspect, so maybe not a dealbreaker. There aren’t any English-language screenshots, but a Steam review confirms my expectations of a probably not perfect TL, so I will briskly avoid finding any other ones (most are in Chinese/Japanese, which it was also released in).

The “butterfly’s poison” title is 4chan VNTS dude not knowing his otomege; Chou no Doku has had translations out for a while already, this is just a Switch port. Also he must have been tripping when he put Paradigm Paradox in Love Lab, it’s an Aksys release. Otomege. I should get someone to write opinions on otomege for us someday…」

The Hatabox

When Zaka sent me such a long script, compared to his earlier ones, I kinda gulped for a sec, but apparently he had some motivation today. That is nice to see. Frankly, I just want to get this VNTS over with, because I’m kinda addicted to Alpha-Nighthawk right now and I also got some personal translation practice to do, so I can finally gain some more speed and due diligence. Last week, we’ve gotten this amazing traction through my heureka idea creating those lists, this week, however, I rather put my energy into other areas – such as hiring new writers for other niches and of course – and entirely underrated – actually playing VNs.

Kusarihime being nearly finished with the translation phase really hypes me up. I love this game since I played the title in Japanese and then read the Goldensneer review (does anyone know still know this blogger) afterwards. This is actually when I first heard that Kusarihime inspired titles such as Fate Stay/Night or Higurashi and this is since my catchphrase when someone demands to get roped into Kusarihime. VS seems to be a hard worker and that’s great to see.

FAKKU Games released a big slutge called St.Yariman’s Little Black Book and they forgot to announce the game on their social media. Now that’s truly hilarious. I like games like this, where there are a lot of promiscuous women, who know what they desire. Also it has Gyaru, so I’m automatically sold. First MangaGamer releases Kenzen (Butcha-U) later Fakku does ZERO CHASTITY (Mizuryuu Kei) and now FAKKU does  St.Yariman’s Little Black Book with work from sian. Now give me my VALKYRIA localizations!

The lads at JAST must be under full workload right now, having to prepare the release of Gore Screaming Show on the JAST USA side and the long-awaited Slow Damage on the JAST BLUE side. Yes, right this Tuesday morning, the release date of Slow Damage–the fifth and latest of the Nitroplus Chiral games–has been finally announced. So there’s a violence fest scheduled for the 11th Nov and on the 14th Nov. I guess JAST delayed celebrating their spooky month into November. Ah, Onigokko fandisc might also be nice, some Alcot game with cool humor, why not. And there’s also Tokyo Hero Project soon TBA.

I need to talk about Alpha-Nighthawk again here. While I did play this game in Japanese, I doubt I would still remember the more intricate plot details, so replaying it in English and reinforcing what I understood (and noticing what I misinterpreted) when I played it is great. Today, I read three chapters of the game. All the scenes and especially the music was still quite fresh in my head. I could hum some tunes almost instantly. I got myself the Steam version and used a Johren patch on top (this is actually the first time I use Johren with a private account and not a company/website one, so I was positively surprised that you can download free patches without having to submit any payment method first, that’s a plus for the Johren-Store.)

However, when I used the patch I did a little mistake and didn’t drag one small inconspicuous file into the Steam folder. This resulted in the patch malfunctioning. I realized it once I got to the first H-scene in the Wangan Auction House. This unfortunate accident, however, made me aware that Shiravune had to commit to some more intrusive editing to make this game all-ages for Steam. I’ll attach a video that shows what I mean. For the all-ages version they did not only remove the H-scenes, but they also rewrote the game to an extended degree. Once the patch worked, everything returned to the uncensored state (and with less typos.)

Now let’s get to the Nekonyan announcements at Awacon. This panel was streamed on twitter by the NekoNyan account, but they probably planned to break our necks, since they were for some reason unable to record the panel in landscape mode or in any normal way at all. Instead, they were going for the 90-degree angle (no joke). This was one of the worst experiences with publisher industry panels I have made thus far. During the panel multiple people were speaking, among them Joey, Hubb, Kiriya and some others, I can’t tell because we weren’t able to see a single person in the video, just the projection of the screen. However, it was possible to go to the NekoNyan discord and hang around in the #announcements-hype channel so you can get hyped with the other members of that server. Now was it worth it?

To say the truth, indeed it was! Nekonyan introduced a bunch of their brewing sekrit projects and while Zaka already went through them, I might just want to do it again.

First, there was My Klutzy Cupid which lines up with other games using the dojikko heroine type. I actually like those for I really enjoyed Ditzy Demons and as much of Slobbish Dragon Princess as I played (not much). Comedy is always cool and as long it doesn’t have this “protagonist (you) is a pervert” type of one-liner jokes that some YUZUSOFT titles have, I might be excited for it. Just a little.

Next there was Koi to Senkyo no Chocolate. I liked Aokana and also ImaImo are really comfy games, but I kind of believe from hear-say that Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate has a bit more personal Drama inserted into the plot. I doubt it will be as comfy as the previously mentioned games. Verdelish for example did a small funny tiktok post where she pointed out that the characters are overcoming some mental trauma. That does sound interesting, but that’s usually not what I want to play Sprite games for. Well, we will see. Also, funny moment. Right as this got announced, I joined the KoiChoco discord and told them that the resolution patch party is over, because the official release was announced. They weren’t too annoyed.

Third there was Bakamoe. I can say absolutely nothing about this title, I have not heard of it before and I probably will not seek it out. Maybe I’m missing out on something, but my backlog is long enough.

Fourth, they had Uchi wa Mou, Enki Dekinai! which is a game from Sonora that I actually played! Indeed, I did that! Nekonyan introduced it at the panel as an “Shirobako for Eroge” and while that might be true, it is actually not the first game of that kind. Some titles that come to mind about illuminating the work life of an eroge development company are Yumeutsutsu Re:Master/After and Eroge: Sex & Games make Sexy Games. Uchi wa Mou, Enki Dekinai doesn’t make this a fetish game or yuri game though, instead it can nearly be classified as an Onee-chan game. The heroines are all quite mature and some of them are very doting personalities.

Fifth, there’s the big one: Shinsou Noise ~Jushin Tantei no Jikenbo~ which was the big reveal that was supposed to get the people in awe. Well, I’m actually not in awe, though I’m still excited about the announcement.

For one, it has artwork by Hamashima Shigeo, known for her work in Clock Up. Secondly, this game is a combination work of teams from Liar-Soft and Silky’s Plus. A lot of semi-big names are involved in this game so it’s safe to be at least a tad bit hyped. This development also kind of shows that NekoNyan is indeed willing to venture outside of the comfy Moege/Charage bubble and go for more serious stories where there are more things than the survival of a school club at stake. Previously, they also had titles like Hello Lady and they are still supposed to publish Future Radio and the Artificial Pigeons, so there are at least a couple plot titles in the pipeline. AstralAir and Sakura Moyu. are obviously titles that I expect to be announced in 2023. Copium.」

I see that you manage to make early VNTS, so my bad for late posting the link to my VNTS Review.

https://forums.fuwanovel.net/blogs/entry/3706-to-the-blue-universe-review/

Once again I hope that you’ll enjoy my VNTS Review for this week.

PS – Out of all five Nekonyan announcements, Koichoco is obviously redundant to me and I don’t know what to say in regard of Baka Moe Heart other than it’s comedy VN, so all that’s left are their three announcements in which it’s surprisingly ended being localized by Nekonyan instead of Shiravune. In any case, I’ll look forward to those three even though apparently Shinsou Noise has disappointing ending. Oh, and my belated congratulation to Shiravune in regard of Alpha Nighthawk release.
