Visual Novel Translation Status 23/10/22 (+Major Updates)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. Today’s cover image is from Norn9 because after god-knows how long Aksys Games decided to revise their translation of the game. Today there was also the release of Chou no Doku Hana Kusari and Paradigm Paradox in English for Switch, but that’s for next week. Otome players eat good this week, let me tell you.

Hi, Hata here. After I really had a down phase last week it quickly switched into a high and I stumbled into a productivity rush. Since there is not necessarily a lot to talk about inside the VNTS section, we will extend our commentary with ample information about new movements that Fuwanovel has undertaken this week. It’s a lot – actually much more than I believed to get going in a single week. I must have discovered some energy reserves somewhere under the bed I guess. Also, there’s a week without any personal drama at all – we needed those!

Zaka also told me that we don’t use H3 formatting for sub-headings inside the VNTS blurb, so I won’t use them. Now let’s get right into the news!

The Zakabox

「A boring week for me, but maybe not for everyone.

First of all, the H2O progress looks pretty fast to me (am I crazy?). I guess imaimo was also somewhat quick, so I guess this tl might be too.

Second, Nekonyan says they will announce a whole five currently secret projects at Anime Weekend Atlanta, which is held 27-30 October. A bit too late for this VNTS, but just in time for the next!

Third, Aksys announced a bunch of new titles, all for the Switch. Apart from the Death Mark sequel, it’s all otomege as you might expect from Aksys. Of note is that Norn9 will be ported along with its FD getting picked up, and this version of Norn9’s translation will be revised (see 6:35 in the poststream interview. From what I remember, Norn9 had some questionable editorial changes made regarding character voice. I also see mentions of a translation error; no idea how frequent or important those were given they’re hard to avoid completely.

Other than that, I just got through final exams for the two courses I had this quarter. I probably passed both. Onto the next! Maybe I’ll even read some VNs and slack again instead of actually doing things… though I have things planned for both the 28th (need to translate some lines…) and 30th (I’m going to be featured somewhere with Hata, so prepare your BL goggles). But at least for like five days I don’t have academics to worry about. Well except for contacting people about a thesis project thing but ANYWAY.」

The Hatabox

「Okay, in retrospect I lied last week, because this VNTS is also a couple days late. This time, I won’t make any excuses in relation to my mental health or anything because it has improved back to a level that allows productivity again. If you have paid attention to our twitter and website going through changes you will easily see what I mean. But let’s quickly get to the discussion part of the VNTS, before I will lay out what we have achieved this week and why this might have the potential to become a big gamechanger for fuwanovel and the whole visual novel scene.

A quick glance across the list, makes me happy. H2O, Ginharu and Akagoei 2 are all making progress. This is cool to see. As Zaka has already mentioned, the H2O project manages some – surprisingly – quick progress. Given it is not too difficult of a game to translate and that they already proved their proficiency and care with the Imaimo translation, this is a welcome sight!

The translation phase of Soukoku no Arterial – the next MTL-edited Eushully-ge that’s going to eventually be finished – is creeping closer to completion. I’m not really aware of this game, but I know there is an actual card game embedded into the gameplay. I remember my few practice hours playing Verethragna ~Seisen no Duelist~ (an Astronaus Sirius game) that has both a banger OP + soundtrack and some addicting card game gameplay that kept me engaged for the better half of a day. Yes, I did a 12 h binge of that game and never touched it again. That must be my finisheritis, I guess. I look forward to this being completed. Excluding the fact it’s MTL, we really cannot talk of an Eushully-curse anymore, can we?

Well, let’s get to the actual meat of this week. The publisher Aksys Games (who is known for their frequent Otome game localizations among others) made a boatload of announcements at their last presentation. Since I am only an occasional otome player and didn’t dive too deeply into the otome localization situation, I can only guess what these titles are like and how hype people should be about them. Thankfully, we could grab someone in our Fuwanovel Forum community who created an absolutely amazing thread full of extended knowledge about all announcements. Raise the curtain for our guest Shiawase_Rina. Please follow her on Twitter!

Right as we speak, there is a convention happening in Atlanta, the Awacon or Anime Weekend Atlanta. This convention lasts 4 days which is a day longer than any convention I have attended thus far. I don’t think four day conventions (besides Gamescom) exist in Germany, but I could be wrong. I really tried to look up the schedule and see when panels happen, but it wants me to download their app, which is too much effort. Anyways, both JAST USA and Nekonyan are attending that convention and they will have panels from which we can expect great things. I’m banking on JAST USA to announce a date for GSS and Tokyo Necro – they will surely do the former judging from how much they advertised GSS on twitter in the last weeks, but maybe not the latter.

Nekonyan will be attending and unveiling some of their secret projects – in total it will be five titles! Will the DMCA’d Houkago Cinderella be among them? It would be a fun timeline to live in, lol.

MangaGamer will not be attending AWA, but they will present something at AnimeNYC in the middle of November!

We’re going right into Halloween-Week now and this makes it quite likely that we’re going to get surprised with le spooky Halloween releases. I expect one from Shiravune. I would love another Nope Nope Nurses so much! (The trilogy package just released in Japan today, too!).

And past Halloween there is also another really wild Hornyge in the pipeline. FAKKU will finally be bringing us St. Yariman’s Little Black Book. Looking forward to that LOVELY set of Gyarus.」

A week full of wonders is a wonderful week #Deep

Well, as already announced, I’m using this space to recap the last week and the amazing growth that Fuwanovel gained during it. While we have not really achieved any progress upping the activity in the Forums, a lot of events act as precursors to a possible resurgence of activity in the coming months. I could be coping really hard, but I fell in love with Fuwanovel over the last weeks and months and while I don’t deny that this all gives me a personal ego boost, much more important are the benefits that the visual novel scene as a whole could experience through our deeds. All I see is progress and I think this is beautiful. So now what did we do?

1. New reviews are being released

After Annie released two short game reviews of games that are only 10 minutes long (1 and 2), we also got some support through KuroKairin who released a review on a Chinese untranslated title called Banmeng Yexing – A Journey on Limbus. It is quite amazing to have people who can break the language barrier that we cannot even surmount by learning the elusive Japanese language. Chinese is another mammoth source of visual novel knowledge which we can only explore through a native lens. The attached comment really made me tear up a little. Just one drop.

2. Casting full rez on the Fuwanovel Steam Group

A lot of things that we come up with while brainstorming are best executed on a whim. Thus we decided to check what the Fuwanovel Steam group might have to offer and what it had been used for in the past. Result: The Steam group was intended for a small group of Fuwanovel regulars to group together and play multiplayer games and strategy. Right when I heard about this, I also began scouring the forum and found a thread listing Fuwanovel’s sub-game communities – most of which are deserted. This prompted me to revive the group again. I told our Em(i)press to give me admin rights and made an attempt to both bring back the Steam page and the Curator. This Steam page had one major benefit: it still housed quite a big number of some of the formerly most active Fuwanovel members – some of which I was able to convince to take a look at the forums again. This caused a small surge in activity and new re-introduction threads.

3. Setting up the Curator Account

Attached to our Steam Group there is a curator account. To explain, a Steam curator account is used to write short 200 character one-liner reviews about everything the platform has to offer. Previously, it was necessary to own a game on your attached Steam account, but these days you can simply choose games by searching for it and adding your blurb, then releasing it. This is obviously quite abusable and it would not be hard to bloat your curator account with lots of games most of which you have not even played. Admittedly, we’re not planning to do this. The benefit of these short curator account reviews is that your review might be shown as a recommendation or warning below the game’s shop page. For games which barely have any reviews, this gives you a very good opportunity to be seen by the niche audience that is interested in that particular game. The Fuwanovel account already existed for many years and was run by Global Mod PLK_Lesiak, Kendjin and Palas, someone who I could not bring back until now. At this point, there were 67 Reviews created on that account – I added three more. (Kara no Shoujo, Togainu no Chi and Sweet Pool.) We aim to make both this group and the curator account really active. Given our team is huge we probably have access to informed one-liners for a boatload of titles.

4. Partnership with Nukige Nightclub

When you like Nukige (Erotic games that deal with sex and perversion which don’t really focus on plot) you must check out our new partners at Nukige Nightclub. You might be aware of them through their amazing effort creating this huge spreadsheet which keeps you informed about all the games that Steam bans or takes off their platform. They also have another spreadsheet listing all the 18+ patches which are available. We’re super happy to work together with them and obviously profit from the mutual link exchange on our Discord servers.

5. Compiling all Fuwanovel Services into a single link

Centralization is not only a socialist ideal, but also a possibility to accumulate the most knowledge in a single place. For this reason, we decided to create one central link and called it “Shareable Fuwanovel Community Masterlink” in order to make all our services – as well as those specific communities we partnered with – easily accessible to everyone. It is not farfetched to assume that Fuwanovel wants to build a Reich of interconnected services. Some people rumor that you might call this a “community”. Consider bookmarking this link, you won’t regret it!

Our endgame will be that all things that are necessary to know about Fuwanovel become accessible through one link. A link that can be wordlessly sent to colleagues and friends, so they know what’s up at a glance and can click around in our userspace and our list of adjacent communities. This is a good transition to introduce today’s main dish.

6. The Big One: “Fuwanovel’s Ultimate List of Notable Visual Novel Communities as of 2022”

Let’s continue with the Grande Finale. It is something close to my heart and that I’m personally very proud of. Fuwanovel now offers the most exhaustive listing of the communities for visual novel discussion across the whole internet. This list is by no means complete, but it is striving to develop over time. Small additions and restructurings will be made constantly to improve the QoL of the users. For example – with the help of KuroKairin – we set up a small Google Form, so people could request submissions for their own communities they want to have added. Presently, the site contains more than 300 links and I can tell you right here and now, please go explore the visual novel scene. There is so much more than VNDB, Fuwanovel, Reddit and Twitter. So so so much more. Simple google research will take you everywhere. I learned this during my research period. Venture out there, find new friends! Find those niche communities no one speaks of!

Click on this area to view external content from Twitter. By clicking on this area, you consent to the transfer of personal data to Twitter. You can find more details about this in our privacy policy.

The impetus for creating this list was actually born from my “””psychosis””” with the r/visualnovel subreddit and its owner. Browsing the reddit, I noticed that in the sidebar on the right, there were only related subreddits, the /vn/4chan thread as well as itch.io listed. I was more than aware that the head admin has had his own feuds with discord users, so it didn’t surprise me much as it frustrated me. In my mind, I connected this willful omission with the lack of new members joining the VN.Info Discord and then transferred this reasoning over to how other communities must’ve been impacted by this change and how they also must’ve lacked the influx of new members coming through that most visible of places. What also contributed to my decision, was that I felt a bit bad for SuperAnge having his iconic list obscured. I was sure that I was onto something there. I found out later that the list on reddit was at least not deleted.

Then I went to go research deeper. It was clear that I would’ve based my own list on SuperAnge’s preparation, so I reached out to him in DMs whether he was okay with it. He did approve my plans and I went to work. It took around six hours of laserfocused internet research in old blogs, related link lists and performed specific searches like “Visual Novel General Thread” or “Visual Novel Discussion”. Later more obscure search terms like “VN Board” and “Narrative Games Discussion”. I probably could’ve been able to find much more, but for as a basis, this was sufficient.

I went deeper and ended up on Facebook. You could think that FB is a dead medium, but there still exist easily more than 30 VN centric groups there who still get frequent activity by their core members. This is probably due to Facebook having lost its relevance to the industry states, but in developmental countries like the SEA region or LatAm it is still extremely popular. The only community I was part of and still used these days were the Visual Novel Enthusiasts and Justin Lam’s colleagues group Visual Novel Readers 2.0.. But now I’m part of many more. It’s insurmountable how much visual novel discussion content exists out there.

The same applies to Steam Groups. There is such an abundance of them, but unfortunately this now seems to be a medium that’s about to die out. The livechats list multiple thousands of people in some of these servers and there is barely no activity. The reason being that these people don’t use Steam much to properly interact but more as a way to show off what game’s they are playing and to collect games in their easy-to-access library. Sad, there is a lot of potential there!

Lastly, I started listing some Twitter accounts and I did not believe that it would turn out like I’m about to tell you. I merely went through a mental list and noted down some of the active twitter accounts which are known to make huge contributions to the community discourse. Among them, were people who one could count as quoteunquote “influencers” in our microcosm. Those are people like DistantValhalla, Meru, Kars, Moogy, VNsParadise, VNSalesman and some others. Next,  I added a lot of the official company accounts – which I’m sure I missed many of. To add a funny note, I also added some VN gimmick accounts like Kohakudoori (a guy who larps as being the biggest Tsukihime Kohaku fan in the trichiliocosm) or bots like the PC-98 Bot and RandomVNBot. This is where the fun began:

After my preliminary list was finished, it was meant to be a very innocent post on Twitter. I expected around 20 likes and some RTs applauding E for effort, I guess. But here’s the mindblowing part: The negligence to notice that I created a sub-category that added an & between two categorizations urged KaroshiMyriad (Kars) to make a sarcastic QRT about my list, saying that he learned he’s listed as an “important personality & gimmick account“. Kars has a huge following, which comes from being one of the amazing people who are always up-to-date on not only his own special field in Type-Moon, but also in various other fandoms. You could say he’s a bit of a Wario64 for the niche visual novel scene.

Well, with that huge retweet, our post blew up and it is still growing right now. Frankly, this is the first time we made a tweet this viral, a feat that I did not believe we could do because we’re intentionally not playing the algorithm game. (Instead, we act as the familiar old man who tells the younguns about some cool games they could play and make ha-ha-funny tweets.) Maybe we should eventually think of a marketing strategy, but that kind of takes the fun and spontaneousness out using twitter. Our goal is it to signal boost things that are under the radar, because they might deserve more eyes on them.

We’re extremely happy that this one tweet managed to blow up so much. I also noticed that several smaller servers have now listed our big list in a dedicated “#other-visual-novels” channel on their discords. This is a great sign against gatekeeping and community reclusion, so if community people freely allow their members to find other places and wander around, we will take great steps towards a more interconnected visual novel sphere. And this can begin with Fuwanovel. I feel this could be amazing.

That our efforts would yield benefit to others this early, is something I simply couldn’t foresee. We hope that this helped to give Fuwanovel the visibility kickstart it needed to revive the forums and the blog to a sufficient level. We owe Kars, Meru and all other reposters a lot here. This is something big accounts must realize down the line. You’re carrying the ability to cause a butterfly effect for a single retweet may change the world. Positively as well as negatively. Anyways, enough of these sentimentalities. Let’s close this 4300-words VNTS with Fuwanovels new motto:

Let’s make Visual Novels popular in the World!

We already have Daybreak confirm that they’ll at least will release Mizuha’s patch on Christmas later, so at least there’s one good news for anyone else who wait for the patch. We also have Sekai decided to release Raspberry Cube in Chinese first, although in the even with several circumstances that lead Sekai to do this in the end I can’t exact says that I like their decision to release two Madosoft VNs in Chinese first.

Other than the news above and two nukige release from Shiravune, no much that I can say in regard of this week.

By the way here’s VNTS Review for this week below, and I hope that you’ll enjoy it as usual.

When I saw that title I thought there are lots of important updates this week but it seems it was referring to the development of fuwanovel. Dunno, it’s not my business but maybe you should do a FNDS (FuwaNovel Development Status) and post site-related updates there.

No wonder posting VNTLS takes so much time in a barren week such as this one. I thought it was because you guys just being lazy, but it seems to be the exact opposite. It’s because you are working too hard and putting unrelated stuff into VNTLS.

The actual reason for the delay was in part that I had exams and had to destress, so that made me write the VNTS late more or less. That said hata then also took extra time and got distracted writing a different thing… things happen. Hopefully they’re not going to happen that often (;^ω^)
