Visual Novel Translation Status (09/10/22)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. Today, the cover image will be from White Album 2 because we have a special guest community here this time where this might become relevant! Other than that, it has been quite silent this week since barely any new updates that we were not aware of yet happened – oh well, there is one. Be prepared for it being one of these games that many people have been hopeful for for years. And with the current group that is taking the helm of that project right after their recent success story, it might be another resounding victory for the visual novel community. Keep your water prepared 😉

This time, we have Zaka & Hata talking about the sparce translation status content for the week. Our guest will be talking less about the status, but instead seizes the opportunity to advertise their own project. Given what amazing feat they have pulled off in the past, such privilege is utterly deserved, too.

This week kept me extremely busy. I got the heureka idea to simply contact a lot of people who had been Fuwanovel Discord regulars and tell them about the resurgence. This was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback which showed us people love that the community is finally showing signs of life again. Triggering people’s nostalgia seems to be a functional strategy and leads to happy elated reactions.

Well then, shall we begin?

The Zakabox

「Hello everynya…. no, we’re not doing that one again, I refuse to succumb to my feline nature yet again. I’m doing better, though the last vestiges of this damned cold are holding on for longer than I’d like. Speaking of holding onto things for longer than I’d like, MangaGamer came out with their monthly updates for this week, and Sona-Nyl is on the list. For a translation that was basically completed years ago save for little parts, they sure have been dragging their feet on getting the last few percent done. I think there’s some complication in getting console-version content into the game and perhaps some bonus text involved, but honestly you can’t help but think the whole thing smells of not particularly high priorities on any end of the deal. Certainly, if I were involved in a translation and then two years later someone wanted me to do some more lines I’d be a bit miffed. Though they say “integrated”, so I guess it’s purely a technical issue at this point. In some sense understandable, given that this scene has a lot of need for skilled programmers and reverse engineers but likely none of the money needed to pay them satisfactorily. The other MG news is subject to much that same bottleneck: post-beta scripting, in beta, preparing for beta… progress here is going to be unpredictable.

https://twitter.com/MangaGamer/status/1578455790482231296?s=20&t=WtVT6U6-xu_-9muc3d04xA

The one special note I can provide is that the Rance X translator has expressed serious doubt in his ability to meet his self-imposed(?) deadlines. Perhaps, we should not be entirely surprised. Technically progress numbers actually went down this week, though progress went up. Steiny-boi explains that it’s due to new text being found as well as a different counting method.

You may be living under a boulder of considerable size if you haven’t heard of this one, but the previous silly ban of Chaos;Head NoaH by Valve has been lifted and it’s now available on Steam. The media attention and the plain silliness probably helped, though Valve did leave a statement saying they’d adjust their procedures. I’ll believe it when I see it, and I encourage everyone in the VN scene to buy from any other storefront if they can. As always, unfortunate as it may be, the translation that’s released is bad and you should probably wait for the upcoming Committee of Zero fan patch before you try it. But now you can buy your kuso product on Steam. Yay. Some guys are trying to use the momentum to launch a similar campaign for a decidedly less kuso translation, the Muramasa one. To be honest I can’t in my heart of hearts believe this one will happen, but I will link to the petition anyway.

On a different but related issue from the usual bannings, Valve also seems to be weird about letting horror visual novels be on their spooky halloween sales. What’s up with that?

On the fan tl front, Imaimo translator Tooko has announced their new project: H2O -Footprints In the Sand-, specifically the fd-included √after and another version. On a sidenote, I didn’t have to copy and paste that √ sign. Why? Because of how Japanese people usually type kanji. In simplified terms, what you do is type how you’d say something into the text field, then press the “convert” button and choose the right alternative. But why keep yourself to just old boring kanji when you can just put in the names of all kinds of symbols in there? It’s really handy to just type in “be-ta” and get β right there, though maybe you’re more of a lovebombing guy and like good old はーと♥. Or you’re writing porn, they do that a lot in those. “Ruuto” (るーと), a Japanesified “root”, is all you need for √. And that’s probably why all kinds of crazy symbols have flourished in Japanese titles, writing, and even common expressions like “plus alpha” (sometimes written +α), meaning “plus a little extra/something”.

Which is all to say that there isn’t much else to say, because not much happened this week, so there you have a filler from my Japanese trivia. God, I’m starting sound like Peter Payne in his damned j-list blog posts. Just add a few decades and make me even less in tune with the current generation and I’d fit right in, oniichan! Help. If nothing else, at least let me try to shill something more dignified than the latest onahole model.」

The Hatabox

「My lord, this is a terrible VNTS week… Except H2O and the MangaGamer updates, there is almost nothing new that really sticks out. Guess we use our blurbs to talk about the little things that have actually some relevance:

Click on this area to view external content from Twitter. By clicking on this area, you consent to the transfer of personal data to Twitter. You can find more details about this in our privacy policy.

The big title that we have to talk about for sure is Chaos;Head NoAH after it successfully evaded its ban on Steam. Whatever the impetus for Steam was to unban it, it likely had to do with their mailbox being bombarded with worried and enraged fan feedback. A successful campaign of that caliber means, the hope in humanity to be able to achieve great things in unity has been once again restored – just by a little. However, it is a little unfortunate that this game – while being released at all – has been released in such terrible state. During the last VNTS, Zaka and me already made our assumptions how the final product would look, but we could not anticipate the game to not even be completable. The reason is that MAGES., messed up a line in the code that is supposed to launch the true end video sequence – a sequence which doesn’t play.

If you want to know more, read the detailed review of the game by Kiri Kiri Basara, the specialized Science Adventure online magazine, below:

Click here to display content from www.kirikiribasara.com

This bug is unfortunately something that only MAGES., could fix on their own. No amount of nagging Spike Chunsoft to make a patch can fix this. Will MAGES., do it? We don’t know! I personally have bought the game and the Canadian delivery company finally sent the package to me, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I might buy NoAH on Steam though, so I can play the game with the improvements from the patch down the line – Steelbook Version be damned.

There is honestly not much I can say about H2O -Footprints In the Sand, except the fact that it is one of the KeroQ/Makura titles that people keep hyping for the last half decade or so. Usually. I’m very sceptical whenever some Keromakura product translation gets announced, especially because it will probably kick off a lot of slander online because “MUH LE SCA-自 UNTRANSLATABLE KAMIGE WILL BE DEFILED!” sentiment a popular one. Fortunately, this game has a really good team behind it that cares about quality: Studio Frisay, a fan translation group that already made waves with their recent ImaImo project. We can be more than hopeful that this game will turn out well! They already completed the translation for the entire common route, too!

What else is there… not much.

Oh, yes. I remember! There is a small additional project by Todokan… *mmmmmhhhhpfff-*」

A Frog in Winter Wonder Land

Hey, buddies! 🤠

This is the project head and lead translator for White Album 2, frogstat. You might remember our project as “the one that took a decade to finish.”

We’re currently working on the fan disc “White Album 2 Mini-After Story” and are hoping to release a partial patch in October or November. Mini-After Story contains the final chapters of the 3 main routes of White Album 2, as well as countless digital novels and audio dramas. The audio dramas will not be translated in-game due to engine limitations. Instead, we have opted to recreate the audio dramas in the form of hand-crafted videos using in-game assets and .srt format subtitles. Through extensive optimization, we’ve managed to keep even the 30 min long audio drama videos under 50MB, so it shouldn’t burden your bandwidth too much. The hundreds of pages worth of digital novels have all been diligently translated by wa2analysis.com, and instead of retranslating all of them, we will simply redirect readers to them instead. The partial patch will include everything aside from the full library of audio dramas, which will be a work in progress for the coming months.」

*-mmmphfff* …ai Translations who… wait I think we had this already. Then let’s move on to weekly updates for Fuwanovel!

Our guest contributor above coincides with the partnership we have forged with Todokanai Translations. They also belong to our Fuwa-Family now – as visible from the banner to the right side of this article. You can find their post listed in our Fuwafriends section on the forums. We look forward to work with them and they hopefully gain even more traction, once people become aware of their White Album 2 Mini-After-Story thread!

After last weeks’ super silly drama with the Makura folks, the current week passed by pretty uneventfully, so I took it on me to go balls-to-the-wall and invited a slew of old forum members back into Fuwanovel and now we see who will stick around. Fortunately, almost everyone loves what we are doing, which gives us the energy to pursue the goals we are trying to achieve. Recently, some familiar names returned.

Some official localization companies started posting on our forums, among them Cherry Kiss Games’ PR-Account who made a post announcing their game. Such posts will be tagged as “official announcement” in the future. I was expecting that we will eventually attract official PR staff to participate here down the line, but I was not aware that it would go this quickly! Is this a sign of Fuwanovel’s long-established presence? Or maybe they just lurk, who knows!

Lastly, we’re aiming to finally produce new content for the blog again. Our team of writers is already twiddling their thumbs in anticipation (Hata, I’m not sure that means what you think it means -Z). Just yesterday, the first review copies came rolling in and have been distributed to our writers. I hope that today’s VNTS will be the second to last before we release other types of content. The blog needs to become alive again – by all means.

Well, that’s everything now. Thanks for reading and see you next week, folks!

There’s Harugi translation patch though if one want to talk about the big news, but yeah it’s only partial so understandably it’s not treated as the big news here (Even with the translator already tell us that those two untranslated routes are quite bad). No much we can do if the translator didn’t want to translate the remaining routes I suppose.

Anyway my VNTS Review for this week below.

Once again I hope that you’ll enjoy my VNTS Review for this week, and by the way seeing that Nekonyan will announce something at AWA later I’ll look forward to what they’ll announce later.
