Visual Novel Translation Status (02/10/22)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. This week’s picture is from Chaos;Head NoAH because of course it is. Its official localization project having kicked off one of the biggest group efforts the visual novel community has seen so far, predestined it to be. Other than that, we have a lot of other things to talk about and we’re also about to witness one of Zaka’s (mostly justified) rants about an odd translation choice in Ren’ai X Royale and how someone doubled down on it (odd statement about it, not the actual choice made. I can’t judge the choice, not having the full context -Z).

This time, Hata is writing this introduction again because the week was so ridiculously turbulent that we couldn’t find a partner community/community figure to go through the VNTS to add their own dabs of wisdom. The Hata-box will be more information than ranty, we promise.

In a month of keeping Fuwanovel alive, we have done some great progress and a lot of people now know about us and what we do again. However, the big breakthrough — the so-called critical mass reached — is something we will only attain over months. Maybe once we reach this level of self-sufficient community, I can finally settle down for a minute to play a VN again – there is so much in Spooktober 2022 that I have yet to explore… man.

Whatever, let’s begin with the updates:

The Zakabox

「Hello everynyan. If I seem slightly more unglued than usual today, that’s probably because I have a very annoying cold. For example, who the fuck greets people with ‘everynyan’? — You know what, I challenge Hata to do the same actually — but I digress. What’s new this week, apart from my newly acquired infection?

First of all, two routes for the Yosuga no Sora fandisc Haruka na Sora are done. Apart from two routes for previously unexplored heroines, we have a continuation route for Sora in this one. Perhaps it shouldn’t surprise us that they gave a continuation only to the girl with her name in the title…

Second, Mirai Radio now has a release date. To be completely honest, most of what I know about this VN is that reportedly the writer made a bet with some dude on how many times he could put unazuku (“nod”) in some formulation into the game. One of my friends got very wound up about this, and to this day we have a tradition of posting unazukus whenever they come up in our unrelated VNs to meme on him. Anyway, if I have my chakras properly attuned this should be somewhat in the style of Laplacian’s older sci-fi slightly-more-than-moe-but-not-that-much title Newton to Ringo no Ki.

Third, Ren’ai × Royale is out (and for the Marklords in the audience, it’s unmosaiced!). This being an asapro VN, expect there to be some fairly high impact humor in it. While I cannot for the life of me give a heck about the title itself, an Amusing Localization Argument spawned from it, so what the fuck — let’s get into the weeds, except I’m too lazy to read the original text, so it’s going to be really dumb. Again, a foreign agent is currently attempting to annex my body, and I don’t think it even held a sham referendum on it. Fuck.

So to start with the actual issue at hand, Kiriya, a man who if one views his twitter (with replies) would appear perpetually aggrieved, has been posting about a translation choice made in Ren’ai × Royale for a bit. He seemed rather euphoric to be able to own the li— ahem, literalists with the knowledge that a word had been consistently translated as “incel”. Now, to put this into perspective, he’s QC, not a translator or editor. It’s unlikely that he was the guy making the decision, though certainly possible.

As you may be aware, and Kiriya certainly was, some people see red as soon as they see a word vaguely connected to USian popular culture in their translation. Those people were en colère, as the French say, at the news. Though really not that many, unless a lot of twitter replies got deleted. I didn’t check /vn/ though, as I have better things to do with my life, like hit my head into the wall repeatedly. It hurts so good.

In fact, they were displeased enough to create a patch to replace the offending word with a different one. I don’t know if that one’s a great substitute, but I hope they’re happy. And as for how “incel” works in the game, it seems like it plausibly could be a good choice in this case. I don’t know, and frankly I don’t really care. Let us dispense with the boring object level and get straight into the meta.

Okay, Zaka, you say, you’re a translator — but you haven’t even said what word it was! Your wisdom is required.

Thank you for calling me wise, totally-not-me. Let’s begin.

It has been transmitted to me that the word in question was inkya 陰キャ, which is sort of a direct conceptual opposite to youkya 陽キャ. These words to me seem to fit a Bloomer/Gloomer (I didn’t know that last word was a thing until yesterday, to be honest) dichotomy, with one side being “light” and extroverted and positive and the other “dark” and introverted and kind of a wet blanket. Yin and Yang. Except now men can be the dark dudes too, so gender equality win I guess. But there’s no guarantee that the word is used perfectly or accurately in the original Japanese, and maybe “incel” is even a better word for it! So why am I getting into this, then? Well, it would be a wash if Kiriya didn’t reach one step too far and say that…

Sorry Mom, someone is wrong on the Internet. Hold my Trocadero Zero while I totally pwn him. Because, like, no, it’s not literally the same. It’s hard to find a single-ass word pair that’s really literally the same between two languages, but this isn’t on the level of claiming the Spanish and English concept of a spoon is subtly different or whatever, this is pure stupidity. It’s an encapsulation of trying too hard to own the literalists and owning only yourself.

Now, K-boi clarifies in another tweet that they were aiming for the vulgar meaning of incel, where it has acquired negative affect and been used as a club against those you don’t like, losing the precise shape of the original word. Thus, instead of meaning ‘involuntarily celibate’, incelᴠᴜʟɢ refers to the popular conception of the median incelᴏʀɪɢ, with a heaping of negative affect because of course words are made to be cudgels to hit your opponents with. I won’t waste time analyzing how incelᴏʀɪɢ matches up with inkya, because it obviously doesn’t. But what about incelᴠᴜʟɢ? Well, first of all, inkya seems to focus more on introversion and gloominess, while incelᴠᴜʟɢ focuses more on anger — note how so many _killers_ specifically are labled with the word. I also think inkya might be less strongly gendered, because one of the more prominent uses of inkya I’ve seen recently is this cute series of very gloomy introverted gf pics. Who you can surmise has a canon boyfriend. And you know, you don’t entirely throw out the original meaning of a word when you vulgarize it. It kind of feels weird to have a not-particularly-celibate celibate, doesn’t it?

But none of this is to say that the actual choice as implemented in-game is inappropriate in any way. I literallyᴏʀɪɢ do not know, and the justification given in another one of Kiriya’s tweets is plausible. Just don’t say they’re literally the same, for madokami’s sake. You make us all dumber in the process.

And there’s a related thread here where it’s very fun, and I have done it many times, to engage like this in the spartan/astute translation wars. But does it help anyone understand anything? No. Maybe you don’t care, and honestly I can’t blame you. You might even gain some cred with equally-aggrieved loc people. But in the end… it is but another brick in the wall.

Okay Mom, I can take the trocadero back now. And have I told you I love you today? I love you, Mom.

Sacrifice Villains got picked up by Shiravune. Since it’s a Clock-up title, we must now inspect the writer, and… I see, it’s one of their plotless nukige writers from Hentai Seikatsu no Susume and other titles. My interest has been zeroed, but perhaps yours has risen.

And finally, we now have even-more official confirmation that the Chaos;Head Noah translation has been blocked from publishing on Steam. We actually had the first inklings of this a while back when it turned up as rejected on steamdb, but the current situation is even more farcical: the game is now due to release on the Switch, but somehow not on Steam. There’s an online petition going around (who knows? maybe this time…), and multiple outlets have picked up the story, but who knows if it will change anything. And I can’t recommend doing something that could be interpreted as harassment by a sufficiently malicious observer, like bombarding random valve employees with mails or whatever (I’m still not sure what to think about the campaign to mail Gabe, to be honest). You don’t want to get bad press for this.

Don’t be too happy about the Switch release being a thing, though. First of all, the releases going forward from the PSP version in 2010 have all been toned down contentwise compared to the original Xbox 360 version (to get a lower age rating). That’s not just horny (there’s no actual sex in the game, which is part of why it’s so ridiculous that it got banned) content, but also violent content. Now some will have no problem with this, but personally, I like my schlocky over-the-top shock elements, thank you very much.

Second of all, the translation is bad. Painfully literal sentence structures, inconsistency with other terminology in the series, terrible image editing, it’s got it all. To be completely honest, I wouldn’t read this without a fix patch, which the Committee of Zero is luckily working on as I type. To be quite honest, apart from Steins;Gate — by JAST — every official translation in the SciAdv series to date has been jank, a clear repudiation of the notion that official releases are always better. CoZ has fix patches for other sci;adv games too, check them out.

This is the state of VN translation in anno domini 2022. An endless spartan/astute style war, dependence on a capricious storefront for profit off any official work, frequent crappy releases, the works. Kinda makes you feel a bit gloomy, doesn’t it? — but not like an incelᴠᴜʟɢ, I hope. But for all that, you know — there are good translations too. The world isn’t lost, but it’s certainly keeping it real. Now please get this god damned cold out of my system, body.」

The Hatabox

It is 17:41… after a routine that rivals Hunter S. Thompson’s writing day Hata is finally ready to write:

Why was I so distracted the whole week, you ask? Well, let’s say I’ve been fighting multiple pointless and clearly artificially orchestrated fights on multiple ends. Same as last year, it is quite obvious who is the master mind behind it all, though I would simply like to call the adversaries “rogue Subahibi-Avis” to not give them the satisfaction of a direct mention. Had to block some folk, that’s alright.

Either way, people tried to really get me riled up and if I was still the very inkya 陰キャ (gloomer not incel) that I’d been last year, I would probably have disappeared in a doomer-coomer-coping anime marathon right now with 10 seasonal shows more on my MyAnimeList profile. Fortunately, working with our VN.Info staff at Dokomi 2022 and all the amazing friends, developers and visual novel fans I made in the span of the last half year, turned me pretty much into a youkya 陽キャ for life. Lucky me.

Other than this tempest in a teapot, I’ve been doing quite amazingly. On Sunday, we discussed a lot of plans concerning the next year’s conventions and how we’re growing them, visited some Irish comedy tour, got an amazing draft for a logo design for Mimir which we are building our website design around, hired a new staff coder that has been a long and proud Fuwanovel member for years and now handles our tech and maybe the recommendations quiz. Lastly, we got rid of some frostbite that was trying to nag at my warm personality. Me and Fuwanovel are better off without naggers.

Lastly, I delete the word “w*kism” from my vernacular for all eternity. There, it is gone. Now let’s get to the translation status comments:

I would like to immediately address the Elephant in the Room and the most likely biggest movement that the visual novel community has seen: The Chaos;Head NoAH Official Translation is about to be released. As Zaka already mentioned, Steam (Valve) rejected the game on basis of it being too lewd in parts (despite already being tuned down) and Spike Chunsoft, as customer-friendly as they are, refused to release the game on Steam in a downgraded state like that. This spurred on the reincarnation of the Operation HiddenHand (OPHH) movement, which once was founded to collectively represent customer demand for a localization of Robotics;Notes Elite.

Their method of making their voices heard have historically been petitions on Change.org – ballots where you fill in your fantasy – or if you are brave enough your real name – and you become digitized to a add+1 to the petition’s total count. Well, growing a petition seems to be an easy task with such a legendary, beloved, appreciated and highly anticipated game, so they could reach about 5000 votes in not more than a couple days – truly insane! And it keeps growing.

Click on this area to view external content from Twitter. By clicking on this area, you consent to the transfer of personal data to Twitter. You can find more details about this in our privacy policy.

Unfortunately, making the release happen is not the only difficulty that the fans of the game (or by extension game series) face, because once again – like all of their official localizations prior – Spike Chunsoft half-assed the localization to a degree that is in-ex-cusable! Zaka mentioned a handful of blunders and general incompetence in his part, but I will simply show you one, two threads of (clearly biased but passionate) Committee-Members being en colère about the state of the official translation. Topped with a cherry on top that deserves a Golden Raspberry of localization incompetence.

Additionally, I’m kind of mad because the game is supposed to release in 3 days and I have not gotten a single mail from Videogamesplus.ca, the service where I ordered the game on the 10th of MARCH concerning my purchase. What I’m getting instead is spam mail, spam mail and more spam mail. Fuck them. If it doesn’t arrive, then this was my last time trying.

Haruka na Sora is releasing a partial with two routes done. Actually they could stop right after Sora since apparently no one cares about the other characters, but maybe you wanna do the niche girl likers a favor. When I talked to Mad on our Discord, we got in a bit of a quarrel, because I think he is not whipping his staff enough. I simply don’t believe that someone’s session output should be around 20 to 30 lines PER DAY, that feels just pretty lazy to me and Zaka is the only person in the world whom I forgive laziness in a project they joined in as a dedicated member – but that is just me. Ah, he told us also that the YnS applicants are so picky about waifus that they would apply to do only specific routes. There is a reason why in official projects you better have as few translators as possible because otherwise it is simply impossible to keep consistent quality. But at least the project is progressing…

From one project with incomplete parts, we jump to the next. Actually one that has only been released a couple hours ago with barely any fanfare behind it. I’m surprised there is not much hype around this title concerning it is the likely last fan translation project by NekoNyan staff Ittaku, the old geezer guy with an unhealthy obsession for huge ass games with multiple routes that could count as separate games. This is the case with HaruUru (Haruka ni Aogi. Uruwashi no). This game is a PULLTOP eroge, which has aforementioned abundance of contents. Unfortunately, if you like to complete things, then we’re going to disappoint you, because this patch is a partial eternally fated to be a partial. Four routes is all you get, because apparently they tried to hire people for the rest, but nothing ever came out of it.

Ittaku is a monster: He did fan stuff like To Heart 2, Clover Day’s and in official capacity, games like Floral Flowlove and Nukitashi. He’s probably glad he doesn’t need to juggle both sides to his medal anymore and now earns a bit of cash in his medical practitioner’s retirement as a Nekonyan TL for life.

Next, I have to obviously address Zaka’s gripes with Kiriya’s wrong opinion on the internet, right? Well, I think Zaka used up enough space as it is and I’ll just add my opinion of this that I posted under some random 3/10 review on VNDB. Maybe next time, Zako~

Something that no one seems to have addressed for a week or two is that the Aiyoku no Eustia project, aka the expected August curse killer, has progressed a little. I actually used my “7000 follower ego” on the twitter account to message eplipswich, the guy who has initially posted about the translation project on Fuwanovel and he told me inconfidently that he plans to make his post when he reaches the 100%. So yeah, Aiyoku no Austria is not off the table yet!!!

Apparently, Shiravune came out with their surprise of the month: Clock-Up’s Sacrifice Villains. I’m real with you. We recently got a bunch of Publisher staff on our forums and equipped them with cool company flairs, so they can make official announcements and while people like hubb and Seryuu do it for their giveaways, Robert K. from Shiravune seems to be a bit reluctant. I’m currently in a lock whether he eventually changes his mind to make a thread or if I should make one, but in the end it will probably be me. In order to get publishers to officially post their stuff on Fuwa, like it had been back in the Golden Ages, we probably need more frequent users to make it attractive – I can understand.

Akagoei 2, Kusarihime and ChusinGura are all progressing forward smoothly. Nice to see.」

Okay, there we are at the end of our lengthy discussion about the VNTS this week. Zaka hopefully recovers from his cold quite swiftly or I will send him a blanket. Let’s speak at last about a few changes that the new Fuwanovel will experience:

Click on this area to view external content from Twitter. By clicking on this area, you consent to the transfer of personal data to Twitter. You can find more details about this in our privacy policy.

A) Emi, who is a cute Swedish cute Very cute Super cute Administrator and Fuwanovel’s current Empress has started her dream area. Not, not the dude with the face reveal!

It’s a V-Tuber Discussion space! Now you ask, what does Fuwanovel have to do with VTubers? Well, given that there are slowly VTuber influences creeping into the visual novel industry through experiments like Go!Go! Nippon’s Akira & Makoto Misaki, OVERFLOW’s School Days infamous characters gone VTubers Kotonoha Katsura and Sekai Saionji plus my prophecy that VTubers have the potential to be the new billboards to spread visual novels in the Otaku world, it is probably a nice idea worth pursuing. Also she loves it and has made like 70 Threads with detailed information on many performers in like a single day. I love her passion and we will make this place great!

B) Fuwanovel has finally created a small section called “Partner Posts” where so far a single thread named “Fuwafriends” has been posted. In there we separate our partners in Partners, Friends and Publishers and describe what perks they can get being in cahoots with us and planning to take over the world with visual novels and kindness.

https://twitter.com/BishoujoNEWS/status/1576358731775807489?s=20&t=j7vwH_IjICb-hS9Esn03xQ

C) Sinned (man who pays the bills and hosts the servers) is currently working on a cool connection method for all the Fuwanovel & VN.Info related things. Sure, he wants both Fuwa and VN.Info to be separate entities, since we’re running with different teams on both sides, but I enjoy the thought of a growing FuwaNetwork or FuwaZone. It sounds so early 2000’s. I’m suggesting FuwaConnection!

Click on this area to view external content from Twitter. By clicking on this area, you consent to the transfer of personal data to Twitter. You can find more details about this in our privacy policy.

D) You may have noticed that we have started doing daily polls on Twitter. Those polls are not of much consequence nor do they have enough value and participants to be worthy market research methods, but I like doing them. I’m always picking a slightly controversial question and hope for some responses to enjoy. It varies how active they are used, but they usually reach around 150 participants that we are thankful for! I just wish for a couple more comments, ngl!

E) Lastly, I want to mention that while we reject giving our data to another service like Linktree or Carrrd, we simply made a html page called FuwaLinks which you can and should share around so more people can find everything we do and join the FuwaConnection! I really the love the sound of this, weee~!

Okay, this was probably the longest VNTS yet, so we let you go back to 休憩. Reading a long ass post like this takes a lot of energy. Maybe, once Fuwanovel hits critical mass, I can finally play VNs again so I’m not living only for the community anymore.

Oh… nearly forgot something!

Bye, everynyan!

Once a writer for German site VNinfo, now the guy running the show (we're trying to save him from Hell okay). His energy is infectious, his passions strong, and his attachment to Nanahira manifestly unhealthy. He likes Sayonara wo Oshiete, long walks on the Internet, and excels at koolaidmanning.

I did want to mention that the Captcha did give me some bothersome problem, although apparently it’s probably because I don’t checklist in ‘Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.’ and I solved the problem by checklist it.
