Visual Novel Translation Status (28/08/22)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. This week’s picture is from Inyouchuu which JAST spells with one O and one U because burgerlanders STILL can’t tell long sounds from short ones. Oh, and it released this week, apologies for the autism.

Jokes and homages to the last VNTS — that was posted on the 02/07/21 my god — aside, this time we will be featuring two people doing the VNTS commentary in an attempt of giving you two perspectives and focus on different projects in the pool. I’m going to start and then Hata, yes that guy, will be continuing with his second viewpoint. He is not as critical of translation as I am, but at least he does actually read VNs in Japanese. Also he actually wrote this second paragraph and is trying to sneak it by you, but here I am having to edit it to make it not a lie, ree. Oh well. Here goes nothing!

The Zakabox

「It’s been a while. So why am I back? Well, first of all I don’t even know if I’m going to be back; I’m going to throw this commentary at Hata and hope he finagles up the required VNTS skeleton (he did not), convinces me I can just post it without, or whatever. Second of all, the reason I mention Hata is because we’re joining forces with our German compatriots (we live in VN land) VNinfo. Rest assured, I and cooler heads at VNinfo are here to rein in Hata’s excesses while using his strengths (you can start writing the BL doujinshi right now). Anyway, we’re reviving the site with a mostly-new team. I am also stepping down as editor-in-chief and will instead be a very opinionated senior editor/writer that doesn’t pretend to run the place. Except when I do, but then it’ll still be pretending.

But onto the VNs we follow, through a post darkly, its name VNTS: wait, bakemonogatari portable? Never heard of it. The actual release was on the 22nd, so VNTS is a bit late in reporting this one. This is one of those anime tie-in VNs, so the usual expectation is that they’re a maybe-play for fans and an avoid for everyone else. Bakemonogatari has quite a few fans though, so I suppose the audience is there. As the name indicates it’s a PSP game, so get your magnifying glasses/sharpening filters/superhuman eyes/actual real PSP ready for the low res glory. It seems to have a “conversation battle” system to try to replicate the feeling of the original, so bad gamers beware I guess? No idea how it works, have fun finding out.

So who are the people bringing us this translation? On VNDB we get “Anime Game Translations Team” which is somehow simultaneously the most and least informative group name I’ve ever seen. They have a discord link though, so it’s time to investigate. My immediate impression upon joining the “Anime Game Translations” discord was that these guys still have notifications set to “all” rather than “mentions only” by default. Amateurs. Thankfully, my habit of always checking and changing the setting is deeply ingrained by now. Other than that, it looks to be a loose conglomeration of projects for… anime games. If you want to, YOU could be the leader for one of the projects! Or so the project list implies. Not all of them are VN-like, which I suppose makes sense.

The particular team for Bakemonogatari Portable looks capable enough; vertical text is wisely tilted 90 degrees, command labels don’t look too weird, the TL has worked on other projects before, all that good stuff. This post on the discord should be a decent sample of more descriptive text: it’s a bit high in the one-thing-after-another plain narration style for an intro, but not particularly offensive for a fan translation.

The weird white line is probably an emulator bug. I think.

I don’t really have enough dialogue lines to judge, but nothing jumps out as totally terrible, so this should be passable if you’re not terribly unlucky.

Whew, that got long. Okay, so what else do we have? The Chusingura 46+1 translation is at 10.27%. Given that this VN is really hecking long, that’s not an inconsiderable amount of progress. But will translator-kun stick with it for the full 82770 lines? Who knows. This one technically has some parts translated officially, but in the worst way imaginable: highly censored, taken from the mobile port’s low quality assets (apparently), and likely the translation job isn’t amazing either (though I think it *started out* okay for a bit). I wish them luck.

Gin’iro Haruka’s tl is done. Yes this is more recent news than VNTS reports, but I got a discord ping and everything. Tremble before the might of my information network (literally just being in the tl group discord). Now *translation* being done doesn’t mean editing, release, and whatever is done, so you’ll still have to wait. The translator, Bee (more known for working on working on Akagoei… wait fuck moege are more popular nvm he’s more known for this now FUCK), really had a hard time with the last heroine’s route (Hyahhhhh if you’re reading this btw). That and all the long sex scenes. Hopefully whatever clout he desired enough to finish some random incomplete moege translation shall now accrue to him. Or he’ll sell out, but that’d imply negotiations with triplicate, so idk about that one. Plus selling out is mendou as hell in general.

Nursery Rhyme continues to not be dead, and in fact is in testing. Whoa. The project leader of this boi is one of those guys who just sticks to a project and completes it in 8 years or whatever, which is pretty hecking respectable. The one guy I remember doing something similar is Ittaku with ToHeart2.

You may notice that Soukoku no Arterial is at 90%. Regrettably, this is an edited machine translation. It is too much effort to insert a puke emoji here, but you may imagine it at your own leisure (shrek revelation optional).

Oh, also a Making Lovers fandisk released. I suppose if you like making lovers it will make you love… I’m not finishing this shitty pun.

The rest looks like nukige or h-rpgs. Subarashiki Kokka no Kizukikata (How to Build a Magnificent Kingdom) might be interesting if you like things with a lot of choices to ‘build your own story’. Also, running a brothel. I like the brothel idea but the choice thing seems cringe to me, I hate shit that’s effort to 100%. Also more choices means less depth for each branch, though if you write enough… ah well. One guy on vninfo seemed to like it (okay it was Tyr). You may take that as you desire.」

The Hatabox

「”Knock, knock…? Is this the right place?” I obviously did jack-all preparation right after Zaka, my beloved, suddenly threw above text at me and gave me instructions to do some regex wizardry where I just struggled and threw it back at him to do it by himself. Now this dusty old thread looks in no way different from how it was back in the day with the addition that it has a new commenter guy, idk. Well, introductions first:

Hi, I’m HataVNI. If you have followed the VN scene in any capacity, you probably know me as the guy with way too much time on his hands and who is not afraid to bump into your mother’s twitter DM not with the intention of sending her a picture of his wiener, but instead recruit them for the next insane project he came up with on a whim. You might also know me from numerous instances of drama with some people who habitually LARP as Mamiya Takuji on adderall, but since this year I managed to completely turn my self (not a typo) around and just be a beacon of peace and harmony in the community with the persistent wish to restore fuwanovel to its previous state as a central community hub for everyone to use without obstruction. If you want to read more of my musings, I recommend you to read my diary that is in form of a fuwa userblog with the creative name Distractedly Undistracted ~comment te dire ADHD~ which is a reference to the best eroge I have ever read: Sayonara o Oshiete ~comment te dire adieu~. I made my first post there and it’s already pretty schizo, yes.

Enough about my shenanigans. What you guys wanna see are my thoughts on what the localization/fantranslation scene that we love and cherish has produced this week, so here we go:

On the official side we have Jast’s newest attempt to cater to a niche audience with Inyouchuu – Insects of Insemination (yes I have the same autism as Zaka when it comes to romanizing with long vowels). My interest in this game would be higher if I was not getting used to weird creature intercourse since taking a look at Ishuu Aigan or that Kamakiri-Bee hybrid monster in Closed GAME *shudder*, but creepy-crawly insects do not really shock me as much as you might think. In fact, I’d be more interested in the Black Cyc game Extravaganza ~Mushigurui Hen~ and since Jast seems to have people like TheZackZeal (GSS translated 100% woooo) on their side + some good ties to Ban’ya & Ueda Metawo it might not be too unlikely they get a game like this should the insects sell. Ironically, while Inyouchuu has le insect ichaicha pyuupyuu it also is supposed to contain slapstick humour which makes me believe it must be some kind of black comedy? Shoutout to EchelonV for some insane dedication towards that series btw.

Nekonyan released some afterstory content for Making Lovers, which is cool I guess. I know this game is highly beloved due to its different nature from other charage to be beginning right at the character routes, but besides my beloved green haired girl Karen there is nothing that really appeals to me with these games. I like my moege/charage to have mystery and story in them, something that cryofrzd will cryofreeze me for. The next title from Nekonyan I’m super excited for is probably Jinkoubato, Aoitori or Irotoridori no Sekai they have been brewing for a while and Nekonyan keeps delivering. Wish they unbanned me from their discord tho (´;ω;`).

KaguraGames is known for releasing a bunch of really good games and a LOT of shovelware, bottom of the barrel RPG-Maker titles that all feel the same and are not difficult enough for the mechanics in these games to matter unless you habitually like to kill yourself (not the toxic way, the in-game way). However, there are some banger games like Evening Starter, Lilitales and now their newest release Subarashiki Kokka no Kizukikata that was (as pointed out by Zaka) highly praised by my bestest friend and partner in crime Tyr. Above are a couple of of messages from the VN.Info Discord if you are interested in his quick musings about the game, but I surely bought it and will play it once I’m finished literally building our Subarashiki Kokka on Fuwa – which will take a while, I believe.

Let’s get to the fan translations, which I’m highly excited for as one of the goals of rebuilding fuwanovel is to make use of its 10 years of history and the tools that we have amassed here is to achieve a renaissance of new fantranslations. I could now go on an Aaeru-like diatribe how fan translation yields a net positive for the world, but we just leave it at that: Fan translation is where the popularity of otaku media in the west originates from. Period. You don’t need to be literally Peter Payne to be supportive of efforts that kept and keep the community alive.

Another pariah of the community called Ayana recently pulled me on a Zaregoto discord and that made me realize that I never read a NisiOisiN work besides Bakemonogatari and some xxxHolic story in Faust: Anthology 1, so seeing a Bakemonogatari PSP VN being translated is actually a very interesting thing to see. AGT has previously proven to be good workers and I became aware of them after we advertised their Vampire Knight DS FanTL on VNI which a handful of German otome fans actually went to play. Bakemonogatari feels to be one of the hardest things to translate since NisiOisiN is known for his extreme ways of conveying meta-transcendental humor that breaks the fourth wall and is very dialogue-heavy (he literally used mirrored Japanese in one of his works). Since this game uses a lot of puns and dialogue-heavy choices I simply hope they did well – presentation-wise that game looks solid.

Gin’iro Haruka is also going towards completion. It’s our good friend Bee who works on this who has already done great work on the Akatsuki no Goei games as well as Oneechan no Yuuwaku. Now, he also picks up a project that the similar-to-Zaka-self-described lazeball Arcadeotic announced years ago: Bishoujo Mangekyou 2.5 -Katsute Shoujo Datta Kimi e-. Funnily enough, Arcade (by extension Euphemic Translations)  seems to have gained some motivation and now picked up Bishoujo Mangekyou 4 – Maiden’s Crime and Punishment – – which was announced by him in 2018 – again. He also says he wants to pull it through till the end. We wait.

There has also been a TL dropped for Re: LieF ~Shin’ainaru Anata e~ which was announced nowhere and you could only find in the Steam discussions forum for the game. Frankly, I do not know how much still lurks in these places, but it makes it worth checking out. Unfortunately, the guy turns out to be an unapologetic MTLer of sorts. And weirdly enough… their heavy edited MTL project reads fairly well, similar to the Eushully FanTL projects that have caused some controversy about language purity last year. I will still not play it, gomenasobase~

The other stuff sounds pretty nuki to me, so I don’t really have any comments on them. Most nukige I play are Gyaru and otokonoko-related. Make of that what you will. Tomgirls are not gay.

For real guys, this was extremely fun to write. Auf Wiedersehen!」

HataVNI

Once a writer for German site VNinfo, now the guy running the show (we're trying to save him from Hell okay). His energy is infectious, his passions strong, and his attachment to Nanahira manifestly unhealthy. He likes Sayonara wo Oshiete, long walks on the Internet, and excels at koolaidmanning.

Since VNTS is back, may as well bring back the tradition in which I’ll post the link to this week VNTS Review below. By the way of you ask me which is the most interesting news to me, it would be both of Houkago Cinderella and Walkure Romanze partial patch releases.

https://forums.fuwanovel.net/blogs/entry/3624-afterschool-alien-review/

Well just in case some people been lurking and waiting here, I should say that now I’m back and thanks for the wait.
