Visual Novel Translation Status (08/19/2017)

This week’s header image comes from two projects which both launched Kickstarters: Sakura Sakura and Shining Song Starnova.

VNTS (Visual Novel Translation Status Updates Series) is published each Saturday and brings the latest updates from VN translation projects — both licensed and by fans — from around the net. If you find any errors, or you think a project is missing from this list, please let us know in the comments.

From The Team:  Comparatively slow week, and it’s been a tough day over in Camp Tay. Thus! I’m going to let this intro stand alone: short and sweet. Much thanks to Decay for his help compiling game updates. – Tay

PS: No forums ETA. Sorry, everybody. I’m trying.

VNTS Commentary Section

Zakabox™ 「This is the place where Zaka occasionally shares his wisdom. Will he show up this week? Will he have anything to say? Only time will tell.」

Decay’s MusingsHey all, it’s been a little while since I’ve done a commentary. I’ll try to be a bit more active here from now on.

Since I missed last week’s commentary, I’ll say that Otakon was pretty cool. It was kinda disappointing that MangaGamer was the only company who announced any VNs there, but they were still good announcements for Rance fans. I’m not really a Rance fan, though, and none of their other announcements really spoke to me. They have enough good stuff already in the hopper that I’m not really too worried about it.

SP may not have had anything at Otakon (apparently because it was a last-minute addition to their con tour), but they have teased some announcements at their AnimeFest panel happening… *checks watch* really fucking soon! 1PM EDT today, to be exact. I’m really not sure what to expect from that. I suspect their biggest announcements of the year have already been made, but you never really know.

JAST probably won’t have another announcement this year. Like last year, they said their piece at AX and will probably let that be that. Unlike last year, they’ve been making a minor stink about how they’re turning a new leaf. New JAST, according to them, will post more updates, will have a fancier site, and most importantly, will release more VNs. They’ve already launched their new site this week. I’ll believe the last part when I see it, though. I would really, truly love for JAST to start kicking ass and releasing loads of VNs, but it’s just so hard to imagine. They made similar claims in 2015, where they claimed that they would release almost their entire backlog, and only ended up releasing a tiny fraction of it. I want to believe.

Sakura Sakura’s Kickstarter is pretty interesting, but it had a pretty unfortunate start and it’ll be a struggle for them to reach their goal. My current prediction is that, assuming they get no additional promotion, they’ll end up with daily gains in the low hundreds and have around 50% a few days before the end. And at that point they will basically need additional promotion if they want to make it. I hope they do make it because I always appreciate more competition.

Their promise to have an honorific toggle is quite bizarre. To be honest, I don’t really see the point. I’ll support translators on either side of that issue, but I feel like you need to pick one and commit. They gave a glimpse of what it would look like on their Discord, and it was rather unimpressive, with honorifics just straight cut out and no other changes made, including for a teacher character where students called them by their last name alone, something no one does anywhere. If you don’t want honorifics in a translation, then you have to localize them, not remove them.

Anyway, that’s it for this week. Have a good one, everyone. And if you pray hard enough, then just maybe we’ll get our forums back!

Sakura Sakura seems to be 25% done, not half bad they might reach like 20k atleast, their goal is modest

also SakuSaku coming on the 25th, been a long time coming but its good timing

NOOOOO! I was really hoping to that vn picked up by someone but not by moenovel, anyone but them! By the way, are they picked up fandisc without touching original game?

Freestyle just linked the wrong vndb entry.

The only company who will ever license anything by Pulltop is Moenovel. Pulltop owns and controls Moenovel, and Moenovel exists to localize their games. Would be weird if anyone else stepped into the picture.

What about fan translators? Wait, don’t tell me, unless they translate in secret they will probably get C&D right?

I was only talking about western publishers who would license/officially release their works. As far as I know, there has been no C&D for the fan translation of Kanojo to Ore to Koibito to, a Pulltop game. I seem to remember some C&D hubbub over Cocoro@Function way back in early ’14, but I don’t remember the details on that.

Looks like the forum wants to be down for a while longer there, so I guess I’ll just made the synopsis for the VNTS Review here (Synopsis was supposed to show us the teaser part of the works). It was still had the title though, but this time it’s just abridged short commentaries here. Anyway, enjoy the synopsis for Sakura Idol here.

Sakura Idol

The title was very simple (Just add sakura and idol from Starnova), and hope that Winged Cloud didn’t release a VN with that name lol. As for this week, looks like Mangagamer was most busy here with most of announcements from them. I like it that Evenicle was starying to speed up the editing, because they need that. As for Sona-Nyl, too bad that right now only they and God who knew the progress but judging from the Twitter it’s still a little (The progress).

I was quite worry in regard of Sakusakura considering that they just managed to gather 6,337 with 30 days left. I said this because I remember that I was watch closely Chuusotsu KS and the goal was lower than Sakusakura (20,000), and yet the funding was slow. So I think Sakusakura could be like Chuusotsu (Barely funded), regardless of that goid luck to them though.

No comment for JAST other than I had faith that they won’t be able to compete with both of Mangagamer and Sekai in regard of VN releases lol, unless they changed their policy in regard of release everything with physical edition which slowed down the releases greatly (I knew that some people prefer that though). That said, they at least managed to releases more than one title per year recently, which to them was already an achievement in itself lol.

That’s all for now, and I think I won’t expect much from Sekai for now. Hope that the forum could recover sooner.

Is it me or mangagamers table I misses some vns?

I just double-checked their project status page and the only thing missing from that page is the Umineko fighting game, which isn’t a VN.

Is there anything else we should add?

Okay, I just compared it with the list of 2 weeks ago, list of this week actually longer because of Otakon announcements. Sorry, I should have checked out before posting.

Whoops, I forgot to update the progress of Pure Pure on our page, so here it is…

Chapter 2: 30,13% -> ~37,82%
Total progress: 22,59 -> ~ 24,49%

Peace!

It’s kinda late to write commentary, but I’ll say this at least: I literally got the TH2 numbers through discord. If you used to post updates on fuwa and they somehow are still dead by next week, it’s an option!

…hopefully that won’t be needed…

The Musumaker translation is active again.

Actually it has been way more active that announced, but moving to the HD remake killed my progress report script and I haven’t made a new one until now.

Progress:
Roughly 10k more lines translated.
23.8%->39.5%
It would have been 30.9%->51.4% if it wasn’t for the fact that the HD version adds around 14k lines.

More details and future updates on the forum thread (eventually).

Here’s my VNTS Review this time, and the title was Sakura Idol just as I promised here. Enjoy.
