Visual Novel Translation Status (07/30/2016)

This week’s header image comes from our 3 releases this week: ChuSingura46+1 S – Chapter 2 & 3 (purchase it on Steam); Supipara (buy it from MangaGamer) ; and Corona Blossom Vol.1 (game is on Steam, +/- the 18+ patch on DLsite)

One of our Japanese readers reached out to me this week and let me know they were impacted by this week’s horrifying knife murders in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. We love you, man, and hope you and your family are doing alright. These things can break us for a time, but “afterward many [will become] strong at the broken places” (rough quote, Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms).

We didn’t record a podcast this week (sorry!), but you may yet hear from us sometime this week.

Anyway! Welcome to our weekly VNTS (Visual Novel Translation Status) series, in which we track visual novel translation updates in-house (we don’t rely on /jp/ posts on 4ch, for example) and post it for your enlightenment and enjoyment each Saturday. If you find any errors, or you think a project is missing from this list, please let me know in the comments.

Zakabox™ Commentary

「So Tay and I were kinda going to record a podcast, but for some reason he wasn’t there when I woke up to the very time I said I would and he seemed to agree with. Looking back through the Skype log he seems to have given up like thirty minutes before I wrapped up my three-hour nap literally exactly on time, helped by my alarm clock. To be honest he probably just wasn’t thinking very clearly and went to sleep after mistakenly assuming it really had been three hours – or maybe he just nodded off. So, basically, the bastard stood me up on a date (´・ω・`).

On one hand, that means no talkies. On the other hand, for those of you who prefer text to audio – I know I do personally – the writies should be better anyway. With timezones and all you’re highly unlikely to ever get both out of me, so enjoy 😛

The Bishoujo Mangekyou project actually had a QC come back from MIA status after having been gone since two weeks after it started; apparently their computer broke down. It’s nice and all that they’re back, but it kind of sounds like they didn’t message the project lead at all for all that time. It feels weird to me that they couldn’t get a message through in this day and age of connectivity, but I guess I don’t know where they live. That, or Arcadeotic just worded it misleadingly and he actually did get contacted lol. Edit: turns out it was just him being misleading, check the comments.

Culture Select’s Kickstarter for Wish is actually on schedule, something I thought was actually impossible for people not named InvertMouse. Their Spanish translation is still only at 65%, so that might take a while longer. Not only that, but they’ve got a new translated VN, Dead End Junction, up on Greenlight (and that translation ain’t messin’ around, wow). They also say they are preparing for another Kickstarter, starting with a Prefundia. Dead End Junction seems quite interesting, so good thing I’m here to write about it. Tay & Deccy forgot all about it despite me posting the link and all in our vnts Skype group; they really oughta get more organized… if I were them, I would absolutely not keep a notepad file up at all times to write down any new info I saw since I’m way too lazy. But that’s me, and I think Tay and Deccy actually could do it without dying. It’s not just this thing either, it’s stuff that we’ve accidentally forgotten about for weeks like Steins;Gate Zero earlier this year and whatnot.

Yes, half of what I do is take pot shots at the guys who actually put in the hard work needed to keep this thing updated.

Other interesting things this week: Kotaku interviews the guy who scammed MG so hard their payment processor quit on them and they had to stop providing steam keys with each purchase, not to mention closing their store until they found a new processor. He made “more than 500 bucks” in total from reselling the keys on g2a. Each one of those cost MG a $30 chargeback fee. What a guy.

There’s more to say about today, but I’m too tired to write much more. I probably would have been arsed if we’d done the podcast, but y’know… yeah.

In closing: if you’re working on any kind of writing, make sure to make regular backups on both your computer and online. An offline copy of any online content is also advised; remember, you might accidentally delete the online version (´・ω・`).」

My VNTS commentary is in the podcast this week. I don’t have the time or energy to put it down here.

So what are you guys up to? Anyone playing something fun? Reading anything good?

Confession: I love textbooks. Like, a lot. One of my favorite things is laying on a couch wrapped up in a blanket, eating popcorn and reading textbooks. (Protip for textbook lovers: OpenStax has free, surprisingly decent textbooks!) I’m reading one right now about common neurological/psychiatric conditions, and it’s kind of blowing my mind. Way back in my first year in undergrad, I took a series of Classics courses that focused on ancient and Greek cultures/texts, then finished with Roman/early Christian texts. As I read this textbook (and, like a responsible adult, went back to the 1° research it’s based on), I keep thinking back to those old classics courses and how people were killed or exiled or judged to be demonic for expressing some of these symptoms. I mean, we still stigmatize neuro/psych conditions (which is not okay), but thank goodness we’ve grown up a bit.

As far as music goes, this week’s VNTS was brought to you by a mix of this Key and Peele sketch and a Wizard Rock song I’ve referenced before: Be My Witch Tonight by The Mudbloods. Oh, and “Country Road” by Toots and the Maytals.

Harry_Potter_Cursed_Child_Play

SPEAKING OF HARRY POTTER….. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming out on Sunday. And yet, some people have no idea this is happening. GO YE AND SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS OF THIS RELEASE! Per WikipediaThe story is set nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and follows Harry Potter, now a Ministry of Magic employee, and his younger son Albus Severus Potter.

I’m going to be picking up my copy at midnight and reading it until it’s done. Or at least that’s the plan. What about you?

Have a good week, everybody.

Tay

Hello. Just wanted to say that the next time you do the Fan Translation Projects be sure to list Witch’s Garden as a Luna Translanslations Project, since the old team merged into ours roughly one month ago or so.

Cheers and have a nice day.

Meh, I’m kind of put off of future Harry Potter works because of how shit the end was. As for reading, I love all things horror, so I’ve been reading a book about the 1893 Chicago world’s fair and the man who built a death hotel, killing hundreds of tourists. It’s pretty interesting. Play wise, I’ve been playing Mystic Messenger, an otome mobile game by the Korean company, Cheritz. I usually have no interest in mobile games, but this one has a really interesting chat room/messenger mechanic along with voices, great art, and a unique, if somewhat unplausible, story. Plus I really enjoy Cheritz’s other games, so I do want to support the company.

Eh, no Potters for me beyond fan fiction. When each time you turn a page and read a few paragraphs you go ‘Wait, /what?!/’, then it’s time to put a book – or series! — aside and turn to something else.

Such as Witch’s Garden. I’m really looking forward to that one; until then, my back log is hopefully empty (enough) again.

For now, Katahane is waiting, and I still haven’t had a look at HD Clannad, or Tomoyo After either for that matter, and, and, …

So many VNs; so little time to read them in.

Sorry, Ms Rowling; I couldn’t read another Potter even if I wanted to and your ‘but I never said she was white’ /after 8 effen films with Ms Watson as Hermione/ turns me off the series even more than ‘but Albus is gay and the Dark Lord was his lover’ did.

Yeah… I may have worded that a little misleadingly.
Of course we kept contact over the months, that much is a given. He has been updated on all the important things that went down: from the editor kicking to the new partial patch. I can also say that he very much diligently working with us after the longish ‘hiatus’.

That is all.

There’s an error at Majikoi-A2. Only Seiso’s route is at 33%, the total progress is about 10%.

I believe they’re taking the “TL” part literally. The TL is roughly 30% complete with only seisos. However, we measure the progress overall on our site, and they show this in the expanded table.

Holy cow! Supipara release came out of nowhere, I had no idea it was even close to finally releasing! Thanks for the update, just bought it and installing it now; excited to support a potential VN releasing in the west first.
