MangaGamer lists goals for Supipara funding

Earlier this month at Otakon 2014 MangaGamer had a lot of news to share, including the announcement of an extended partnership with visual novel developer minori whom they have previously worked with on the localization of ef – a fairy tale of the two. As part of the partnership, MangaGamer will first translate minori’s 2009 visual novel eden* for release on Steam and MangaGamer.com, and if that does well enough they’ll also work on 2011’s Supipara – Alice the Magical Conductor.

Supipara is a special case, though, as it was meant as an episodic series, but the first release (consisting of chapter one and two) ended up doing so poorly in Japan that the development of the remaining episodes got shelved. MangaGamer’s goal is to not only get enough money from the sale of eden* to translate the released parts of the visual novel, but also make enough to fund the development of the remaining episodes.

MangaGamer has now put up a page on their site which lists the profits needed for localization of each Supipara episode. While these numbers were already stated at MG’s Otakon panel, the page also features a counter of how much money has been raised so far by eden* and any future Supipara releases. It also helps clarify some details regarding how the required funds for localization are to be counted.

To fund the translation of the first chapter, the gross profit of eden* has to reach 100.000 dollars, and to fund the translation of the second the combined gross profit of eden* and part one of Supipara has to reach 200.000 dollars. There’s three additional chapters of Supipara planned, but how much it’ll cost to have them developed and translated isn’t currently listed. However, if they do reach their funding goals the new episodes might get an unprecedented English first release, MangaGamer states.

Plot summary of Supipara, courtesy of MangaGamer:

The protagonist, Yukinari Sanada, has returned to his hometown in Kanagawa Prefecture, Kamakura City, for the first time in seven years, and is greeted by his older cousin, Sakura Narumi (complete with maid outfit). He wanted to live in peace, but his life at the academy placed on the coastlands becomes bustling and brilliant while surrounded by a lineup of members with booming personalities like Hotaru Amano, the sharp tongued, half-Japanese beauty, and Alice Kamishiro, the lazy witch who loves modern-science and mail-orders.

Eventually, our protagonist is coaxed into joining the action committee for the academy’s traditional beauty contest by his close friend. He interacts with the heroines participating in this contest who are cute but each have an idiocyncrasy or two. Fun events (with their own difficulties) pop up again and again. Your story with “her” about smiles, peace, passion, and love, all while borrowing the power of a witch, is about to begin!

I want this project to succeed, I really do…. however, looking at how poorly the ef series sold, which was a great visual novel…. I don’t think things will go well.

Every serious VN fan has already read ef before it was released by Mangagamer. So obviously not many of them purchased something they’ve already read (I did but I’m one of the few). But Eden and most importantly Steam is another matter completely.
