This tweeter says games that were made using 吉里吉里 will work. Some that were made using
ワムソフト版吉里吉里 will not work. Wamsoft’s engine is actually compatible (untrue), and it’s up to the individual makers on whether they want to put out a windows 8 compatibility patch or not.

Works: Kamidori, Aiyoku no Eustia, Eien no Aselia, Sharnoth, Ever17, G-senjou no Maou, Edelweiss, Seinarukuna, Soul Link. Analogue, Rewrite, Steins;Gate runs but needs to be in window mode. Mashiro-iro symphony, Fortune Arterial, Clannad, MLA run without patches, but it dies at the end.
Doesn’t work: Utawarerumono
Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative are bork too.
I’ve never had any other compatibility issues.
Its a fucking bitch too, because I got to the very end of Alternative before it set in. It seems FMV won’t work at all.
Most VNs run better for me. Wanko to Kurasou’s annoying issue where it needs to play a sound to run is gone, and Sekien no Inganock and Shikkoku no Sharnoth flatout load faster.
Utawarerumono works fine. Really, I didnt have any compatibility issues too. Can add to this list Majikoi, C;H, Phenomena, Saya, Remember11

Another reason why I don’t upgrade to Windows 8. I know of several people who updated to 8 and are “QQ’ing” because they can’t do some things or can’t play some games.
It kinda makes me sick that some group of people is so desperate for improvement, that they’re creating these crappy OS out of the blue. Even then, the only fact that it’s “new” is the thing that attracts everyone, despite the fact that it limits much of the features that Windows 7 has.
As far as I’m concerned, most of the new games (released within the past… I dunno, 6 months?) are probably NOT compatible with the Windows 8.
Older games like Ever 17 work because all it does is call up game files regardless of its address. As an example, I can take the entire game, put it on a flash drive, and run it directly from the flash drive on any computer. Isn’t all games like this though? How screwed up is Windows 8 that the OS can’t even do that?
The problem lies more in coders using deprecated library calls, and MS deciding to ditch deprecated stuff for updated libraries in Windows 8.
So if you get a VN where the programmer was too lazy to look up the newer calls and uses older ones that can happen.
Which is most of the time the reason for stuff breaking when using dynamic libraries.
You can’t blame Microsoft for getting rid of old stuff which shouldn’t be used anymore, and not being backwards compatible for centuries.
wow, what a dumb reason. This means all those old games won’t work due to MS’ laziness, and we shouldn’t blame them?
Most of the problem would be missing dlls or something so there can be workaround… hopefully-
Maybe this is old news by now, but Kirikiri Engine games that don’t work can *possibly* be fixed by the fanpatch made for Mahoyo, before Type-Moon released their own patch. I’ve tested it with a few other non-working Kirikiri Engine games of the otome variety and this method does work. It’s not guaranteed to help everything out there, though.

Tested out both “Chaos;Head” by Nitro+ and “Euphoria” by Clockup on my Windows 8. Both of them work great!

Thanks to ET and the link he posted, I managed to repair “My Girlfriend is a President”, that had kernel32 problems before adding patch files to game folder.
I have Utawarerumono working fine on my windows 8 tablet, however Steins;Gate will open fine but my mouse/touch screen can’t click anything in the window thus making it unplayable.
If you use the version.dll you can still play My Girlfriend is the President, however your saves don’t seem to work anymore at least for me, but the story checkpoints from where still work so you can just start from there. Google the error message you get to find version.dlll

Even thought with windows 8.1 , I feel cheated.
Has anyone tried playing those VNs that didn’t work before after activating .NET Framework 3.5? I don’t have Windows 8 so I can’t check it myself.
So I’m requesting that someone else does to check if you regain compatibility for non-working VNs after that.

Lol! I just found out about this issue… except for Windows 7 64Bit. Recently decided to play some of the older games and a lot of them failed to even install or start. Some examples are:
Seinarukana (original)
Prism Ark (Prism Heart 2)
Sakura Strausse
and many others. From what I read though, 32Bit Windows 7 is fine but 64bit is an issue. Guess time to do a dual boot system for those older games are a VM machine for them… *sigh
