Yosuga no Sora

Yosuga no Sora
ヨスガノソラ

Aaeru

Foreword I finally caught up with the two mysterious translators of Yosuga no Sora who will now be known as B and Infinity (there was an editor too, but was asleep). This team has been staying low profile for a duration of time since the C&D had gone out to the team at TLWiki. Despite that, they have agreed to do this interview of which I am most thankful. Yosuga no Sora is one of my favourite games and I am totaling rooting for these guys.

Interesting Tidbits
<B> they told me they hadn’t started yet
<B> (They) asked me to join their team
<B> I joined, and everyone on their team promptly quit

The Interview

B

<Aaerul> 1. B, were you the founder of this project?
<B> errr it’s a bit complicated
<B> the project was started on the tlwiki by some people whose names I can’t remember
<B> I saw them do nothing for ages
<B> decided to see how hard it was to do
<B> did half of one route
<Infinity> Aku, Vaines, and EsperKnight according to the wiki history.
<B> then joined #tlwiki and asked them how they were doing
<B> they told me they hadn’t started yet
<B> and asked me to join their team
<B> I joined, and everyone on their team promptly quit

Infinity

<Aaerul> …
<B> I suppose that’s it
<B> oh, the Russian didn’t quit
<B> but he’s never really joined
<B> calls himself proger_xp, but he had another name on the wiki

<Aaerul> and when did Infinity join?
<Infinity> I discovered the project around the beginning of this year
<B> I assume he found it just after I…hijacked the project
<Infinity> I had played through (almost) one route in Yosuga, but due to time and other things coming up, as well as my own slow reading speed, I never finished it.  But the game really captured a place in my heart.
<Infinity> So after a while I decided to offer my help in the project, around the end of February.<B> actually, I must’ve finished all the scripts for the Kazuha route and just plonked them on
<Infinity> (and) our Editor-san followed really quickly.

<Aaerul> The project was rumoured to have been stalled several times throughout this year
<Aaerul> and then others report it was active
<Aaerul> was it actually stalled at any point? was it just after the C&D?

<B> depends on what you mean by stalled =/
<Infinity> Well, that’s more of a result of the project going behind closed doors, then people can say what they want.
<B> If you mean periods where we all just stopped working on it
<B> there were…quite a few periods like that
<B> not because we all quit, but just busy

<Aaerul> 2. One of the most enchanting things I found about Yosuga no Sora was the unusual relationship shared between Sora and Haru. The two of them are so close they may as well be one person.
<Aaerul> What is one thing you liked the most about this game?

<B> You know what they say…incest is best.
<B> actually, what first caught my eye was the art
<B> I read someone’s review of it…I think it was Takajun’s and erogereview’s review
<B> saw the art
<B> found it really beautiful
<B> and decided to give it a play
<Infinity> The art is very clean and detailed, while also being soft at the same time.
<Infinity> And the backgrounds are very good too.

<Aaerul> 3. what about the characters?

<B> That’s probably what kept me playing
<B> The art was great, but what kept me reading was how much i liked the character’s and their relationships with each other
<B> The story itself…isn’t as great as it could be
<B> but the interactions between the characters are brilliantly done
<B> but on that note, I do hate nao and don’t care much about the maid
<B> so much so that I was considering not TLing them
<Infinity> There are several things I like about Yosuga, the art and the music (oh god the music!), but I think what really made it one of my favorites was the way the game was able to get me to empathize with the characters and invoke emotion.
<Infinity> One thing I remember in particular is the flashback to when Haruka and Sora got the phone call
<Infinity> I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, scared
<Infinity> But not only the dramatic moments like that, there’s also the lighter slice of life scenes
<Infinity> They really made me happy reading and watching them as well.
<Infinity> Like the one scene at the pool in Akira’s route.
<Infinity> Just watching the characters interact, like B was talking about, had a pretty good effect on me.
<Infinity> I’d say it’s kind of like the effect iyashi-ke has, like Aria or other similar series.

<Aaerul> 4. Can you give a rough status update on the progress of translation?

<B> TL and TLCheck: 20%
<B> TL and TLCheck: 20%
<B> …
<B> fking eeepc
<Infinity> Well, we’re about 4% in Editing and 5% in QC, somewhat unexpectedly.

<B>I think we sort’ve blurred the lines of the roles a bit
<Infinity> QC has always been this vaguely defined job
<B> I probably do some editing while TLChecking without realising
<Infinity> But it’s still QC in that I look at the output in the game and identify stuff like line overflows
<Infinity> And stuff like ellipses being centered orz
<B> and I know Infinity does some TLCheck every now and then
<B> if I happened to be asleep both passes

<Aaerul> 5. What do you think of the anime? I don’t really dig the artstyle
<Aaerul> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T3hYTzPP34
<Aaerul> the background art is beautiful and they even recycle the music tracks from the game
<B> considering that the first thing I loved about the game was the art
<B> the anime’s art really irks me too
<Infinity> Yeah, I would like it if they had made the character designs a little closer to the original ones
<B> but I tend to like almost any sort of anime anyway, so a long a they don’t dodge the twincest, I won’t mind too much
<Infinity> But I do realize they have budget constraints
<Infinity> I think it should be pretty good
<Aaerul> It looked to me like it was a design decision to make their faces look all adulterous
<Infinity> From what I’m able to dicern they’ll deliver on Sora, although they haven’t clearly stated they’re doing her route
<Infinity> There’s an interesting webcasted program where the producer got interviewed on their website
<B> I’m just worried it’d turn into the Tsuikihime anime that never was
<Infinity> one thing that’s got me a little worried is that they’ll focus too much on fanservice.
<Infinity> If you’ve seen the full full trailer
<Infinity> It’s got Nao’s tits, full blown.
<Infinity> In the bath

<Aaerul> 6. What is one thing you would change with the way you are doing the project if you could?

<B> if I could, I’d go back to the days of actually working on it properly
<B> I did Kazuha’s route before 1st sem of uni started
<B> during that 3 month break
<B> I don’t think I’ll have such a large slab of free time for ages
<B> speaking of the wiki though, I used to release period patches
<B> after the C&D though, it’s not really possible anymore
<Infinity> Yeah, we don’t want to attract that much attention until we’re essentially done.
<Infinity> Although at some level everyone interested still knows due to the /jp/ VNTL thread

<Infinity> Well, one thing in retrospect would’ve been nice is if I had been able to give my input before TL started.
<B> you’re still welcome to give it before I butcher sora’s route completely too
<Infinity> I disagreed with some aspects of B’s localization, such as the use of tenses, but even though we agree now, I still have to go back and change a lot of stuff

<Infinity> Writing stuff down is important, as I’ve learned. I just started this with Yosuga, as in I haven’t done this before or currently with any of the Yandere projects, but keeping a log of things to do, major changes I’ve made, lines to revisit, etc, has really helped me improve the job I do.
<Infinity> Well, it’s quite extensive, but essentially I’ve got a to-do list at the top, with attached comments, as well as a list of stylistic notes, and then major meaning changes.  Those I think are sections I’d continue to use.
<Infinity> In addition I’ve added a character personality section, so I don’t forget to pay attention to that, and a section for the other members (and myself, if I forget), on how we’re dealing with ellipses.
<Infinity> In Yosuga the writer uses ellipses a whole damn lot
<Infinity> But due to the game system we can’t just copy and paste them.
<Infinity> So I had to invent a systematic way of dealing with them.
<Infinity> They’re like in every other line.

<Aaerul> Well I always thought you are only doing Sora
<B> hah, I still haven’t decided yet
<Infinity> A lot of people in /jp/ say stuff like “Why would you even translate any route besides Sora’s?!”, but personally I’d like to do the whole thing
<B> The original plan was
<B> kazuha -> Sora -> Either Akira or haruka no Sora -> the other one
<B> then think about the rest
<B> the perfectionist in me will probably make me do the last 2 routes though

Thank you.
Yosuga no Sora is the highly regarded ‘Twincest’ + ‘Tsundere Imouto’ eroge. The depth of relationship between the twins, Haru and Sora is astonishing. Everyone should definitely check this out.

Akira route plz.

I’ve only read the first volume of the manga, and Akira interests me in there (as well as Sora, of course), so I’m looking forward to both of their routes. I guess Kazuha is important too.

I also don’t like Nao due to glasses + big boobs. But I do personally think that the game should be completed as a whole for the fans, even if 99.9999999% are just in it for the twincest. But that’s up to you guys.

Good luck to you, and hoping the anime will deliver in the meantime.

And how will we know they are still alive if they don’t update us?
How will they distribute the patch?
How can we communicate them?

-Stuff like this. But, if you ever want to know the latest publicly known status the 4chan /jp/ VNTL status thread should have it.
-My prediction is the internets.
-You don’t. The point of going underground is companies can’t send C&Ds (or any other legal notice) if there’s no one to send to.

I can’t get the game to work on Win7 64bit :/
When I start it, the exe process appears and disappears after a few seconds. Any solutions for that?
Besides that, good to hear translation is still ongoing.
On 4chan it says, 20% is done

The windows 7 64-bit isn’t the problem, I have installed on this, but I got the same problem.
Luckily I had once before downloaded a visual novel, so I knew I had to set windows to Japanese.

How to do it:
start –> control panel –> Region and Language
Tab Location: set current location to Japan
Tab Administrative: Change system locale.. –> Japan
Right mouse button on the time displayed at the your taskbar –> adjust date/time –> change time zone –> Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo

I believe not all steps are needed, but then you’re sure of it 😛
After this install the game (if you have already installed it, deïnstal it in your normal settings –> change everything to Japan –> instal again. (otherwise you get problems with the path to the directory))

Enjoy

pss. Found this after I discovered that my game was only half translated 🙁

Can I change the settings back after installing and then still play the game?

How do you get this to work on Windows XP Service Pack 3?
I’m not what you suggested will work entirely the same as for Windows 7.

Nevermind, I got this to work using AppLocale. It’s much more convenient than changing Windows to Japanese, and then switching back to English.

yeah I found AppLocale too after that 🙂 Btw, the game will stop working once you switch back your Windows to english, so AppLocale it the better solution.

Here is something you might wanna try:
http://opcode0x90.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/patch-for-applocale/
It removes the warning you get when starting a program with AppLocale.

I wish you the best of luck too!

@Tatsujin:

No, they probably won’t (for at least 3 VERY good reasons)

1.
It’s perfectly understandable they don’t want to attract too much attention.

2.
In the interview is said that at least B won’t have as much time as he used to have for this project. So there is a good chance (if not somebody joined the team) that it will take ages. But for me, it doesn’t really matter, because I’m VERY happy that someone does this. And patiently waiting (even a long time) is still much faster than learning enough japanese to understand it youself, right ?^_^ … … and for the fear that the project might be dead: I don’t think so. If the team decided to cancel it, they could just announce that somewhere. There’s nothing they have to fear by saying “we dropped it [because … ]”.

3.
The question itself is kind of pushy. Please don’t do that. On the positive side it shows interest in the project, and that’s a good thing. But it also puts some pressure on the team. Please just wait patiently.

Page bookmarked. I’ll drop by again by summer next year, along with a few other pages I’ve bookmarked as well.

Take your time. It’s a great game with very visually appealing art and a great anime series as well. I have all the time in the world to wait, and to the translator, I hope you have the time to continue working hard too.
